I know it's possible, but can't find the info. Can someone perhaps direct me to an article in the wiki?

I want to open up my slimserver so that I can access it from work and play music on my PC at work from my collection at home.

I currently *DON'T* have a fixed IP at home, but so long as the connection doesn't get reset, I should keep the same IP for a while. I only really "need" this to be available for a few days.

Can anyone help out?

Cheers!
Dan.

EDIT: More info required, I suspect :)

I'm behind a router, but I can sort out port forwarding, as I guess it will be needed. Other than that, my slimserver box has no firewall.

Sign up for a free/basic Dynamic DNS account at no-ip.com
You install a small service on your machine which can watch your router for changes to the I.P. address assigned to it by your broadband provider. It will then update a DNS entry for you so that you can contact the machine by a hostname.

Then you need to open some ports (3483 & 9000) on your router pointing them to the Slimserver box. The exact mechanism for doing this varies by router.

If you just want to stream audio to Winamp, you just need port 9000. If want to run Softsqueeze, then you'll need 3483 also.

Here's the Wiki entry.

Many thanks indeed!

Already on the case with a free DNS service from DynDNS. Now just got to see if I can remember how to configure port forwarding on my US Robotics router.

Excellent stuff though - thanks again.

Hi!

Use Hamachi and you don't have to open up your fw or use a DynDNS service.

There is a HowTo install it as a service on the Hamachi forum.
I use it all day long. :)

Cool - thanks bernt!

I've got slim working (sort of) using DynDNS. I'm working from home today, but someone in our office in Maidenhead can access my SlimServer - while someone in our West London office can't access it :(

Sadly I'm normally based in the West London office, so I need to get that location working. But it's definitely close though.

If I have no joy getting it working as is, then I'll try Hamachi. Excellent - cheers!

Hej bernt!

I've been looking to try Hamachi for a while now (to use with slimserver: work <-> home) and when I read this I decided to try. Unfortunatly I ran into problems.

At work I managed to install Hamachi, but when I tried to connect the first time it didn't work. I only get a "Failed to connect to the mediation server bibi.hamachi.cc. Would you like to keep trying?"-messege. It probably has something to do with the company firewall or something...

Do you know any steps to work around this?

Hi!

If your company use a proxy it won't work.
