View Full Version : Problem updating to 6.5

I have been running 6.3.1 for a while no with no major problems. Given that
6.5 is nearing readiness, I decided to give it a try. I downloaded the 8/29
nightly yesterday and installed it. I run Slimserver as a service on an XP
box. The install of 6.5 went fine, but when it completed, I noticed that
Slimserver wasn't running. The icon was in the tray, but it said it was
stopped. I right-clicked on it and asked it to start, and it said "Starting
SlimServer", but then a short while later it went back to "SlimServer
stopped". I tried this several times, and tried rebooting the system, to no
avail.

Last night I was more in the mood to listen to music, so I went back to
6.3.1 and that worked fine. But I'd like to pursue the problem again, since
I imagine I may face it whenever I do decide to upgrade. What I wanted to
ask here was -- what's the next best step? What debug data should I
collect, and how should I collect it? I don't mind opening a Bugzilla
defect to track the issue, but I'd like to be able to include the relevant
debug information.

Thanks a lot!

Mitch

If the service stops, there is likely to be some information in the
windows event viewer explaining what caused the stoppage.

Start->control panel->administrative tools->event viewer

you can paste what you find (relating to slim.exe or slimserver) here.

First of all, thank you for the reply and the advice.

I decided to give this another go. Previously I installed the 6.5 beta
without first uninstalling my 6.3 install. This time I uninstalled 6.3,
deleted the old SlimServer directory, rebooted, and then installed the Sept
1st nightly of 6.5.

I no longer see my originally reported problem. However, I am still seeing
frequent server crashes. I say crash -- what I mean is that the server will
be up and running, and while I am changing server settings or player
settings, the web interface stops responding and I find that the service has
stopped.

Per your advice, I checked the event logs. Precisely at the time when the
server stops, I see an event with the following information:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7036
Date: 9/1/2006
Time: 10:12:45 PM
User: N/A
Computer: CATFOOD
Description:
The SlimServer service entered the stopped state.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Any advice would be appreciated on how to further debug this. Thanks a lot!

Mitch

I'm experiencing exactly the same behavior when trying to update to 6.5, except that I first uninstalled slimserver 6.3 using the uninstall utility, and then re-installed 6.5. I cannot get slimserver to start, and get the same message in the Event Viewer with no other clues to the failure of the service to start. Please help!

You may want to uninstall, delete (or rename) the /Program Files/SlimServer/
directory, and then install 6.5. I noticed that when I uninstalled, it left
the directory behind, and perhaps some of the stuff in that directory was
causing the problem.

But I am still experiencing intermittent crashes after the upgrade. They
aren't as frequent as I initially reported -- I suspect the increased
initial frequency may have been because it was still scanning my music
library while I was changing server and player settings. Now that it is
done scanning, it has crashed two or three times over a day or two. These
more recent crashes happened just during playback, not when I was doing
anything with the web interface.
