View Full Version : Squeezebox Playback Issues

My lovely new Squeezebox arrived last night. It's a beautiful piece of
hardware, but I am having problems getting it to play correctly.

I had already installed the 5.0.1 server software. Server specs:
AthlonXP1600/512MB-RAM/WinXPProSP1. Accessing streams via WinAmp was
working smoothly from the server box and from external networks. The
web interface is working smoothly from all points.

I set up Squeezebox on my wireless LAN via a D-Link DI-714P+.
Squeezebox detected the network SSID right away. To keep in simple, I
turned off WEP, filtered on the wirelass MAC address and used DHCP. The
network connection came up right away and correctly detected the
SlimServer. Very slick. Player information shows ~80% signal strength.
The Squeezebox is the only device using the WLAN.

At this point I am able to browse all functions, but the playback is
pretty well broken. Playing a track will typically work correctly for
about 7-12 seconds in before the sound cuts out. At this point, the
elapsed time shows a jump forward of about 20 to 30 seconds and then
proceeds erratically from there, often counting off 2 to 3 seconds per
one second actual. The server shows the song as playing, and the WLAN
lights on the router are showing a steady stream of traffic. Hitting the
play button on the remote restarts the song with the same results. Same
results with all tracks tried, from different sources, encodings, etc.
All tracks are mp3. Using analog outs.

I've tried disabling my software firewall, tweaking the server
networking settings, choosing analog volume controls, restarting and
rebooting and the server, all to no avail. Though I'm not convinced it
is the culprit, tonight I will try connection via CAT5 to test if the
WLAN link is the issue.

Judging from its behavior, it looks as though the Squeezebox is getting
all of the data, but losing control of its buffer. This is just a guess.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

(If I can't figure this out and I can line up someone willing, I may
want to try getting this Squeezebox to play from another server, and get
another Squeezebox to connect to my server. That might help to isolate
the problem.)

OK. I've tried wired Ethernet to no avail. Any ideas on other things
I should look at?
