Simple question: are the screensaver's date strings taken from the system
or even hardcoded? Though almost all my Slim equipment's speaking German
by now the screensaver still displays the day of the week in English. Do I
have to change some setting in the system's environment (eg. LANG)?

Michael,

Your guess is right. The strings for the date and time come from the
OS, so changing the language settings on the server itself will fix
this.

Thanks for the information. But after having done a little research on
Google I won't touch this setting. There seem to be some problems when not
set to en_US (found for eg. redhat and perl). After all I _do_ know those
seven days :-)

Speaking as a dyed-in-the-wool UNIX guy, I have to say that
the shell syntax of

% VAR=value command

is one of the single handiest tricks I have ever had the
pleasure of learning.
