View Full Version : Fast Forward and Volume Gain problem

I was listening to a track this morning that has raised a few questions:

1. The volume for this particular track seemed low.
It is a coverville podcast (downloaded and being played as part of my music library).
This track has a Volume Adjustment: -18.16 dB, and I have "Smart Gain" enabled on the player.
I was playing random tracks.
I've forgotten how Smart Gain is supposed to work under these conditions, and couldn't find anything in the help or FAQ.

2. I tried to fast forward through the track a bit.
Playback in fastforward mode was loud!
I assume therefore that Smart Gain had reduced the volume during playback, but fast forward doesn't apply the same volume adjustment.

3. Fast Forwarding / Rewinding seems broken.
Sometimes I seem to be able to skip through tracks, but frequently I find pressing and holding the fwd/rew buttons will perform a next track/previous track instead.
I think it detects the button hold action, but frequently also does the single button press action when the button is released.

fairly sure that it is track gain on random.

it's a known issue. scanning doesn't have replay gain applied. I'll
let you find the bug number.

nothing new there.

Hi kdf <slim-mail (AT) deane-freeman (DOT) com>,

Is "Volume Adjustment" used for track gain?

How does slimserver decide to apply volumes to track playback?

Ah - bug 2289. I've always had smart gain on and never noticed it before, so assumed it must be a new problem.

Always worked for me in the past - I can't find any bug reports on this issue.

I remember some of the discussions where people were deciding how it should work better. I can see various enhancement requests.

I was happy with how it worked. I also use your track scanner plugin - mainly when I want to jump big distances around long tracks. The combination of both suit my needs!

However, the default fwd/rwd functionality is currently just plain broken, a regression from 6.3, unless it's just something wrong on my system. Reading my original post from this morning, I can see that I wasn't very clear what the problem was. The problem isn't to do with ffwd through one track to the next, it's that it jumps to the next track instead of fast forwarding within the current track. I've raised bug 3899 now.

I haven't tried your plugin since upgrading to 6.5 - is there a compatible version?

Incidentally this was fixed recently:
