View Full Version : Slim splits CD into 2 or more Albums

I have about 500 Albumes in my iTunes Library. After tidying it up, I cleared the Slim library and rescanned the entire iTunes library. I now have several cases of a single CD being split into 2 different albums by Slim. I've checked both iTunes and the actual directory (e.g. ...\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\The Beatles\) to confirm that the entire CD is in fact contained as a single entry in iTunes.

Any suggestions on how to get Slim to collapse these back into a single album entry? It's annoying to hear only half an album when you put it on...

TIA

Peter

Use an MP3 tag editor to check the albums, they probably have a DISCNUMBER
tag that is causing them to split. Alternatively, there might be some subtle
difference in the album name, like a space on the end.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did check to ensure there weren't any extra spaces or the like before my original post.

Can you point me to an MP3 tag editor? This is not something I'm familiar with.

Tag & rename works well for me:

http://www.mp3tag.de/ is another good one to have a look at. Also, are you running MusicMagic/MusicIP? I have found that this can sometimes cause problems for Slimserver (particularly if you have UTF-8 characters in your tags). If so, you may need to remove MusicIP's cache and rescan it.

I downloaded mp3tag but it didn't show any obvious differences between the tracks grouped as one album and the tracks grouped as a separate one. I also am not running MusicMagic. I've noticed that it's typically the last track on the album that's split off by itself, but I did check that the TOTALTRACKS count is correct. I was going to copy and paste the tag info into this thread but I don't think mp3tag lets me do it.

Any other suggestions?

A good way to check for inconsistencies, and unusual tags in MP3Tag:
select all the files in the album, and press Alt-T to get the list of
tags. Check that the 'Album' and 'Artist' tags aren't shown as
something like "<keep>" (which indicates that they aren't all the
same) - it should be the actual album or artist, Also check that
there aren't any unusual tags.

Finally, check that there aren't multiple tag versions in the files:
1. Right-click the column headers, select 'customize'
2. Click on the new tag button, and put in:
Name: Tags (or whatever you want)
Value: %_tag%
Field: %_tag%
Sort by: (leave blank)
You should get only one tag type in that column, for your files (e.g.
"ID3v2.3").

Cheers
Geoff

Thanks for this suggestion. Now I'm really stumped :-(

I did what you said and mp3tag seems to show that they're all identical. For example, Slim split Abbey Road into 2 Albums, one with the first 4 songs below and one with the last 13. Here's the exported Tag data from mp3tag for the entire album. (I added Tag as the 3rd entry below per your suggestion):

The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Come Together - 1 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Something - 2 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Maxwell's Silver Hammer - 3 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Oh! Darling - 4 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Octopus's Garden - 5 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - I Want You (She's So Heavy) - 6 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Here Comes The Sun - 7 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Because - 8 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - You Never Give Me Your Money - 9 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Sun King - 10 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Mean Mr. Mustard - 11 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Polythene Pam - 12 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - She Came In Through The Bathroom Window - 13 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Golden Slumbers - 14 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Carry That Weight - 15 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - The End - 16 - 1969 - Rock -
The Beatles - Abbey Road - MP4 - Her Majesty - 17 - 1969 - Rock -

Do you have any suggestions for a next step?

MP4 indicates Apple... are you using iTunes integration? I seem to recall
that can cause dupes.

Yes, I'm using iTunes integration. YOu are right that it can cause Dups but I am not dealing with Dups here. The Dups that iTunes typically causes are songs being repeated (i.e. 20 songs showing up in an album that has 10 tracks). What I have is songs from a single CD being split into 2 different albums by Slimserver, without any duplication.

Just to close this thread out, I got some nice support from Daniel at slimdevices. He confirmed that some sample files where I was having this problem were in fact OK and should not be split across albums. A complete uninstall and reinstall of SlimServer fixed the problem.

Thanks for the help along the way. I know a lot more about tags now than I did before ;-)

I'm seeing the same problem after rescanning with
6.3.0 for what it's worth.

Strangely, however, my Abbey Road is split in
two, but with only track 17 in its own album.
*Lots* of albums, not compilations, are split
in my library now.

Looks like I'll be calling Daniel...

I'm resurrecting this old post because I've got the same problem with Slimserver splitting certain albums into two or more. I am using SS 6.5.1 from 17/01/07.

Most of the albums in question are those which I've ripped on two different occasions (e.g. having first used iTunes to rip, I later replaced certain tracks which skipped with EAC rips. (It's OK, I now know that iTunes ripping is inferior!)) In some cases, the album therefore comprises some MP3s, and some AAC/MP4s. But should this really matter?

So, there are reasons why SS might split them, but the tag variables which I would expect to matter (i.e. Artist and Album) are consistent - I checked this with mp3tag. All the directory trees are correct, with no splits across Windows directories.

My question is, in order to prevent this problem, do I really have to have completely consistent tags across all tracks within an album, and consistent file formats too? Other programs I use like MusicIP and iTunes don't spilt albums like this.

Incidentally, I use MusicIP with SS, and run Windows XP Pro. To prevent any conflicts or duplication, I leave the music directory blank, and although I use iTunes for other purposes, within SS I've selected 'do not use iTunes'.

Just spotted I'm not alone - see

My problem is not confined to compilations

I opened a bug some time ago for this issue. Although the circumstances triggering the bug might be a little different.

In my case, the same album by the same artist split over 2 dirs in the file system result in 2 album entries. Also updating 1 track within an album and hitting "Look for new..." resulted in that track getting split off into it's own album.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4380

There is another thread discussing the issue here

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30555

I haven't noticed the problem in some time, but I'm not sure anything was done to scanner to fix it.

i'm getting this problem too I have checked the tags with mp3tag and cannot find any inconsistencies.

Does anyone know whether this has been resolved? (e.g. latest nightlies)

This might be a conflict with the guess tags feature of SlimServer.

If you are not relying on this feature try deleting all of the guess tags formats in Home/Server Settings/Formatting and doing a rescan music library with the clear library and rescan everything option under Home/Server Settings/Basic Settings.

I had a similar problem with 1 album or 2 albums. I eventually fixed the problem by doing the following:

1) moved the affected album out of slimserver's music folder
2) re-scanned my music folder (so the album was wiped from slimserver's database)
3) deleted all tags in the album, and saved the files in that state
4) re-tagged the files and saved again
5) moved the files back into slimserver's music folder
6) re-scanned the music folder

I haven't had any such problems since.
