View Full Version : Fast, silent NAS?

I'm trying to get away from the concept of using a computer as a server and I've tried a few NAS's so far with poor results. They're either too slow, or maybe working more or less properly with gigabit but too unstable for always-on use.

I'm looking for throughput in the 30Mbytes/sec range and over on a one-to-one basis (i.e. without other network traffic), which I don't think is unreasonable for gigabit. However I'd like this done silently as possible.

Any suggestions? Or does it have to be a computer to get that kind of throughput?

As far as I can make out from the tests below - none of the SOHO type NAS will provide the performance you expect.

Sucky. Thanks for the link.

Guess I'll have to do it the silent PC way after all.

The recently announced Linkstation Pro looks suitable - it has good read perf. on Gigabit in the range 25-40Mbyte/sec.
