View Full Version : Slim Server 6.3 dies when selecting "Slim Devices Picks"

2006-07-01, 14:59
Funny - been running an old version of 6.5b1 for months without any problems in my Intel Mac Mini (10.4.7). Murphy dictates that when I move to a 'stable' release, I'll get loads of problems...

The one that I can't find a thread about is as follows: when selecting 'Slim Devices Picks' from the Internet Radio menu, I briefly see "Fetching" and then the screen goes blank on my SB3. When I go to my Mac, I notice that SlimServer has stopped. Reproducible every time.

Is there a dump from the Mac that I can post to help troubleshoot this?

...and exactly the same things happens selecting 'Slim Devices Picks' through the web interface.

run slimserver from a Terminal command line and if it crashes it will give you a backtrace.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's the command line for this? Any switches required?

I'm not an OSX user but this is what I think you need to do:

1. Open a Terminal window
2. Ensure slimserver is not running.
3.cd to the directory where slimserver has been installed - it will have the file slimserver.pl. If slimserver has been installed in the default location then the command will probably be one of the following:

cd /Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server
cd ~/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server

4. To start slimserver type the following command

You can have options after the command. The following will list the option.

./slimserver.pl --help

If you get errors running slimserver you should try starting slimserver as the user slimserver.

Thanks for that. Here's what I get:

To restate - I've 'downgraded' from 6.5b1 (where Slim Devices Picks worked fine) to 6.3.0. Perhaps this gives an indication as to where the problem lies...?

2006-07-02, 04:13
I found when downgrading from 6.5 to be safe it is best to delete everything include prefs files, caches and database and then re-install.

Well - I've deleted everything I can find and reinstalled - no apples. Exactly the same problem. Even going back to the latest 6.5b1 nightly has the same problem.

Unfortunately, all this un/reinstalling seems to have impacted the web interface also - most of the formatting of the pages has disappeared in both Firefix and Safari. Cleared cache/reloaded/rebooted but no joy. Perhaps this is related to the original problem?

Feeling quite lost now...

The darkest hour...

Seems like i missed the "Users/yourname/Library/Caches/SlimServer" director on my uninstall quest. Everything working now.

Thanks bpa!
