View Full Version : Soundtrack albums and Browse by artist

I want to be able to see an artist called Soundtracks when I browse by
artist. For an album where all the tracks are by the same artist this works
fine if I add an Albumartist tag of Soundtracks:

Artist = Queen
Album = Flash Gordon
Albumartist = Soundtracks

Browse by artist shows both Soundtracks and Queen which is as I want it to
be. However, when all the tracks are by different artists:

Artist = different for each track
Album = Top Gun

I have selected 'group compilations together' rather than 'list compilation
albums under each artist' and the default behaviour correctly identifies this
as a compilation album (even though it has no compilation tags set). It then
gets listed only under 'Various Artists' when I browse by artist. I then add
the Albumartist tag:

Artist = different for each track
Album = Top Gun
Albumartist = Soundtracks

Browse by artist now shows Soundtracks as I want. However the entry under
Various Artists has now disappeared, plus I seem to have gained an entry for
each of the different artists. I only want to see the entry for Soundtracks
and Various Artists. The 'group compilations together/list compilation
albums under each artist' option seems to prevent the multiple artists from
polluting the Browse by artist list, but only on albums which have the
ITunesCompilation (TCMP) tag set. If I set that tag the album only gets
listed under Various Artists and the individual track artists disappear. But
I also lose the Soundtracks entry.

Is there any way to achieve the behaviour I want ? Or is this a bug (or an
enhancement request) ?

I am running SlimServer 6.2.2 and see the same behaviour on the web interface
and on my Squeezbox v3, under both linux (Ubuntu 5.10) and Windows XP.

This may not help, but I achieve the same end result by tagging the
genre as "Soundtrack" (or "Rock;Soundtrack" as appropriate). Then I
just
Browse Genres
-> Soundtrack
-> All albums.
Works really well.

Geoff,

Yes I can see how that would work. I would prefer to be able to see it from the "browse by artist" menu though.

It seems inconsistant to me that slimserver has identified an album as being a compilation (by virtue of the artist tags being different), but has then decided not to apply the same rules it does when it identifies a compilation album by virtue of the TCMP or COMPILATION tag.

If I get some spare time I may have a look at the perl code...

I agree - and have the same ambition to look at the code. Just have
to find the time...
