Hi,

My wireless SB3/Slimserver 6.22 used to work flawlessly. Music was stored on an internal IDE harddisk. Never had any dropouts. Performance superior.

Yesterday I bought an external 250GB external USB2 harddisk for my music collection. Since I didn't want my main PC to be always on (saving electricity), I moved the Slimserver 6.22 to my laptop. I was initially using wireless to the router but experienced heavy dropouts. So I hardwired my laptop. I still have dropouts making internet music unlistenable. Also streaming FLACs has terrible droputs. I noticed buffer underruns on Server & Network Health.
After fiddling around, I improved the buffer issue and the LOW warning of Slimserver went away but it's still awful with internet radio. It's strange I notice that after refreshing the Server Health logs, buffer refills very slowly and hardly reaches more than 90%. Internet radio is such a heavy drain that it takes almost 5 minutes until the buffer recovers. Server response times and signal strenght are excellent, no problems whatsoever. My WinXP Pro Task Manager shows 1% network usage, CPU usage is hardly over 10%. No processes appear to block Slimserver performance.

What could be causing this? Could this be my laptop? Or does the USB harddisk suck? After a couple of FLAC files, I get these buffer results in Server & Network health:

< 10 : 60 : 4% ##
< 20 : 6 : 0%
< 30 : 4 : 0%
< 40 : 5 : 0%

I have an Acer Centrino laptop, 512MB RAM, Pentium M1.3GHz.
I disabled firewall and other processes to no avail.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for your help,

Mike
