Thank you all for your help so far, I'm well on my way encoding my FLAC and MP3's (sorry, girlfriend needs Ipod compatibility).

Question:
I have my music on a Linux (FC5) machine although windoze is possible elsewhere in the house. I and am wondering if there is a good ID3 tag editor as I'm getting a lot of genres and albums hits on my SB3 which could be simplified now the library is up to some 4000 tracks. What do you folks use as I'm trying to make my SB3 visitor / girlfriend friendly by keeping it all simple.

I use 'easytag' under Linux with satisfaction. Fast, decent
options. Now that my library is really cleaned up, I don't need
the musicbrainz functionality that it lacks.

If you can Tag on a Windows machine, I'd use
Tag&Rename by softpointerDOTcom.

I use Musicbrainz Picard and then tweak things by hand with eyeD3 or id3v2. (MB leaves out things like "Composer" and such, so I usually retag classical by hand, especially on multi-disc items.)

Musicbrainz ID's are important to me: I like having the scrobbler submit the musicbrainz ID's for consistency.

It's a pain in the neck to start, so do it in pieces and try to stay caught up as you rip new material.

I'm using The GodFather (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/godfather.html) which is an "intelligent MP3 renamer and organizer" freeware app for Windows
