I more or less agree with the conclusion your friend came up with in his blog article, that Pandora might work "too well" in the sense that it puts more emphasis on trying to match songs based on their component parts rather than looking at the meme of who is listening to what (someone who loves the Arctic Monkeys will probably be able to stand Franz Ferdinand, etc).
I think Last.FM does a better job of the latter, plus it's great that scrobblers exist for virtually every player (iPod, etc) out there which really helps it make valid recommendations based on what you already listen to from your own collection.
