I am trying to raise the priority of slim.exe to make it more responsive. However I get an "Access denied" error message when trying to change it in the task manager. I can change the priority of other tasks. I am running XP Pro and am Administrator. Any ideas??

It's the Windows Task Manager being dumb (or rather, it's been designed to stop you doing stuff like that). Try Sysinternals Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

If you want to do it every time the service starts then a couple of options have been mentioned recently (search for "priority" or something like that). I use Beyond Logic Process:
http://www.beyondlogic.org/solutions/processutil/processutil.htm
and use a Windows scheduled task to run it every 15 minutes.

Give a look to the 'Process priority in 6.2.2 Windows' thread.
