Sounds like you're looking for an empeg/Rio Car (www.riocar.org). They aren't in production but can be found on ebay or on the empeg forums: http://empeg.comms.net. The community is unbelievable... on par and much larger than this one, and software and add ons are still being actively developed. It changed the way i listen to music, similar to the slimp3. Imagine carrying your entire music server around with you and having it in your car. Can't beat it. Best techy item i've ever bought. The slimp3 comes a close second. =]

See, this is the part that kills me. They're not making them anymore.
Even if they're available on eBay, it gives me the willies.

Surely _someone_ will once again manufacture an in-dash MP3 player
for people's cars....

There are several, as long as you don't mind burning CDRs for them. I
know just how you feel. My Aiwa CDC-MP3 is getting a bit long in the
tooth and I've been looking for something with which to replace it. Rio
Car would have been almost perfect.

I just use my iPod in the car and have a pretty custom deck
installation with an aux input. Works great. I even use a wireless
remote for the iPod.
