I have my album art stored as cover.jpg in album folders. I know some also have a smaller thumb.jpg image as well. How are these smaller images used?

The wiki is your friend:

Yes, I read that, but I use 300x300 images, and they show up in the browse by artwork page. The wiki says that page needs 100x100 or less. Just wondering. Guess I'm not missing any functionality by not having the thumbs.

As the page states, the smaller files will be searched in order from
small to large filenames, but still the same filenames. cover.jpg
will be used for either if that is all that is found. The browser
resizes it to fit, and you can leave it at that if you don't mind the
bandwidth being used. recent 6.5 builds are now resizing the image
and storing it so that the browser sees an already sized image. This
may mean that we'll move to a single artwork file, instead of looking
for two.

Sounds like keeping things like they are is a win-win for me.
