View Full Version : Is there an announcements-only mailing list?

I'm finding the volume of messages in the General Discussion forum a little high, and was about to unsubscribe when I realised it's the vector by which I receive announcements (new SlimServer releases, new hardware, new/upgraded plugins etc).

Is there a forum or mailing list which exists just for announcements? If not, could such a thing be created?

I know that a lot of announcements already occur in General Discussion, and others are made in the 3rd Party forum; I think that's good as follow-up discussion belongs in those places. Would it be possible to (essentially) allow announcements to be cross-posted to a dedicated announcements forum which doesn't allow replies?

I'm thinking, roughly, that when somebody starts a new thread to announce something, a check-box could be ticked which creates a copy of the post in the new forum and appends a link to the real thread. Then the subscribers to the announcements forum would see the announcement notices only, and anybody who wanted to follow up could do so in the real location.

I guess the announcements forum might need to be moderated to prevent abuse (and in case the forum software couldn't be modified as suggested above).

What does everyone think? Should this be filed in the bugs DB? Is it feasible?

Agreed. Whilst it is good to see there is a healthy community, I'd like to be able to unsubscribe from certain threads - the psotings about qsnap, encoding methods and suggestions for the 4g SB for example are something I want to be able to read online.

I'm not saying these conversations are not useful or should be stopped - just that we need an option to not get them via email.

Any ideas?

Seconded.

I would like the announcements to be for official Slim business (new
versions of the server, HW, etc.) and for plugin release announcements,
etc. There should be minimal, if any, discussion of the announcements on
the announcements list.

Perfect! Just what I was looking for. Is that referenced anywhere? I couldn't find it when I was looking for such a thing earlier.

Thanks!

Announcements is an extremely low volume list. I suppose that if you never visit the forums then it might be good for something. These are the only messages I've received over the past year:

07/22/05: Reduced pricing, Squeezenetwork news, SlimServer 6.1
10/24/05: SB3 released
01/09/05: Slim Devices at MacWorld (??)
03/02/06: Pandora

I agree that the forums/lists here have gotten busy to the point of being much less useful. I've seen this happen elsewhere, where there are so many posts that you're lucky to get one or half-hearted responses to a question. At the very least, there should be some minimal moderation, with threads being moved to the appropriate forum for the subject matter. I think there's also a need for some additional forums.

I think I recall seeing a post a while back that some new lists were being set up. One of them was for general music discussion. I haven't seen an announcement for this yet though.

There was no announcement, but it's definitely there:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15

and it can be viewed as a mailing list.

What I think would be great if this could be cross-posted to, as per
the OP's suggestion; I too would like to have somewhere I could
quickly check for 'what's new', without having to wade through all the
stuff about 'this new feature is cool, but it should have a knob on'.

Given the low volume of, and lack of publicity for, the existing announce-list, I've added my request to the bug database:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3259

Please vote for it if this is something you think you'd benefit from.
