View Full Version : sync question and a bug report

I just upgraded to server v5.0, and it seems great. I'm new to the
Remote Streaming feature, and I think it will be useful to me if it
allows me to sync my streaming client (i.e. winamp) to the same stream
as my slimp3 client is playing. Is this possible? The instructions
for syncing players point me to the "Player Settings" area on the
device (which is not really called "Player Settings", btw), but I don't
see a "Synchronize" option there. It says I can also do this from the
Player Settings page in the web interface, but it doesn't tell me what
option to look for, and I don't see anything that looks promising.

And I have a bug report: exploring the new options available to me, I
found that I can reliably crash the server by (on the slimp3 client UI)
navigating to Settings->Information->Plugin Modules->Rescan Music
Library and then hitting the right arrow. This isn't specific to the
Rescan Music Library plugin, either -- I haven't tried all the other
plugins, but it crashes with at least one other.

I've actually had the server crash on my a couple other times, but I'm
not sure what was happening at the time (I don't think I was fiddling
with anything -- just playing music). I'll keep an eye on it and
report back if I get anything concrete.

There should still be a link called player settings, which will give you options
to sychronize a player that is capable of the function. Winamp, being a
software player, is still based on an unpredictable buffer. Thus, sync with
winamp clients is still not possible.

in the Settings->Information->Plugin Modules...pressing RIGHT is likely to crash
on any module in the list. It appears to be a null reference.

This description suffers from the same problems as the one in the
FAQ:
1) where is this "player settings" link supposed to be?
2) can you describe what these "options to synchronize a
player" should look like? That's kind of vague, and I'm
sure not seeing anything in any UI I'm looking at.

BTW, are Dean and Sean the only "official" voices of slimdevices
on this list, or are there other people whose answers I can
treat as authoritative?

Depends on the skin. However, in the standard skin it appears on the home page,
junst under server settings. Each player will have its own player settings
link. In Fishbone skin, the player settings link is located at the top right,
as one of three links (Player Settings, Undock, and Statistics)

They look a lot like a list of options. These will only exist on HARDWARE
players. Yo uwill not see them if you are using winamp. However, if you click
on player settings for a slimp3 or a squeezebox, then you will see the following
options on the left side of yoru browser screen:

Player Name
Playing Display Mode
Synchronize
Synchronize Volume
Brightness
Title Format
Forget Player

I won't go into decriptions, becuase they are provided on the. Give you can
read through the full home page and find "player settings", then you should have
no trouble finding those options. If you have only winamp, then you will see:

Player Name
Title Format
Forget Player

Agreed that I SHOULD be able to find these options with no
trouble, but the fact is that I can't, which is why I wanted
a specific description. My Player Settings page for my actual
slimp3 (not for my winamp player) does not contain the
Synchronize sections. They contain this:

Player Name
Playing Display Mode
Brightness
Title Format
Forget Player

Additional Player Settings uncovers nothing related to sync
either.

The server creates the list you have above, then only adds the synch options IF
it is possible to synch the player. If you only have one slimp3, then it is not
possible to synch, so the options do not appear. If this is your only slimp3,
then this set of options is all you will get.
