View Full Version : WPA Problems still unresolved!!!

Sorry to re-post on an old/open subject, but I am still to receive a response from Slim after almost 2 weeks and am becoming slightly disillusioned and fed up. In the hope that this post either jogs someone at Slim in to action or receives a solution/suggestion from a forum member here goes...

I am running the following:

SB2 (Firmware: 28), connecting wirelessly to a Netgear DG834GT (Firmware: 1.02.04), connecting wirelessly to a Netgear WG511T (Firmware: 2.52.29.4), which is plugged in to a Dell Inspiron 5150, (connected to an external Seagate hard drive for music storage) and is running Slimserver 6.2.1.

For almost a year I was running this setup, protected with WPA-PSK with absolutely no problems. However, on resetting the SB2's MAC address, due to a problem with SqueezeNetwork and on the advice of Slim support, the SB2 will no longer connect to my network when WPA Personal is activated. The network is found, but a strange IP address, different from all the others on the network, is assigned, and the SB2 fails to conncet to Slimserver. The only way I can currently connect is by disabling WPA protection, which I do not want and nor should I have to do.

I provided Ross Levine at Slimsupport with this information almost 2 weeks ago and despite asking for an update over a week ago have still to receive any response from him or anyone else at Slim support.

I would be very grateful if any forum members could help out with this issue, and if someone at Slim would be good enough to contact me and at the very least update on their progress with this problem.

Cheers

Oli

You may want to try upgrading to the latest nightly of 6.2.2. A number of firmware revisions have been made to correct problems with various wireless configurations. There is a list of wireless configurations that have been tested. I just did a quick search, and there is also a critical bug involving MAC addresses that Slim Devices seem to be working very hard on tracking down and correcting. You could read over the comments and see if it seems to be the same issue you have experienced; if so and you think there is any new and helpful information you can contribute, you could create a login for the bug system and add it.

I've just installed 6.2.2 but when I try opening it up, nothing happens, the icon in the task pane just keeps flashing on and off, saying that Slimserver is starting, but it never does. I've re-installed 6.2.1 and it works fine.

install 6.2.2 again. sometimes it seems that the install doesn't fire
up right away. installing again has fixed it in every case so far.

Just tried re-installing it twice and still no joy.

apologies for perhaps being too simplistic. I don't run the installer
on windows personally, so I'm only reiterating what has been reported
in the forum several times. It may be that I forgot an uninstall
before re-installing. If that fails, then you would seem to have a
different problem (even though symptoms do sound very much the same)

another thing to try is to run it manually, just to see if anything
gets reported:
start->programs->accessories->command prompt
c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe

After re-installing 6.2.2 again and being unsuccessful again, I tried re-starting the computer. On the password screen I get a pop-up screen headed slim.exe - Application Error, it says,

The instruction at "0x0012e838" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

Any ideas?

What kdf meant was uninstall 6.2.2 and reinstall again, not reinstall 6.2.2 over 6.2.1

I'm running a SlimP3, and I'm finding that many stations coded at 96 kbps
won't play. Is this a limitation on the SlimP3 or do I have a
server/installation problem. I could have sworn these streams played before
I switched over to 6.x. The streams play just fine on Softsqueeze.

Can you give an example? I'll try it on my slimp3.

Are you running Windows XP with SP2 installed ?

That error appears to be a data execution error message - very odd.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912923/

I would try uninstalling Slimserver completely - maybe using a third party uninstaller than the built in one (there are lots you can try free for a short period - I use System Mechanic 6 which has loads of features including a powerful uninstaller). Make sure Slim.exe isn't appearing in Processes of your Task Manager. Purge the Recycle Bin and power down and then back up. Then try reinstalling 6.2.2.

Hey Bruce,

Yeah, something seems to be going on with at least that stream. I can't
play it on my SliMP3 or my SB3. Server says this:

2006-04-02 19:33:19.6865 stream not readable

I'm using the 6.5 branch too. Might be time to file a bug or search for an
existing bug for these streams.

fwiw, they seem to have messed up the MIME types. I can't play the mp3 streams from their web page: instead I get the PLS file displayed in Firefox.

Content-Type: text/plain

That would break things.

It should be audio/x-scpls, not text/plain.

The live365 link on that page should work.

Thanks for checking. I'll search for known bugs tomorrow. Maybe others
with Slimp3s or SBs could check too to see if this (Live365) stream is a
problem for everyone. I know there are other streams that don't work for me
too (I wonder if they are all 96kbps). I'll pass on a few of these others
that don't seem to be working and maybe if you have time you could see if
they play for you.

Something is funny with the way playlists are (not) being handled on my
system. For example, here's a playlist kbcs2.pls that I've been trying to
play:

[playlist]
File1=http://www.live365.com/play/kbcs2
Title1=kbcs
Length1=10000
NumberOfEntries=1
Version=2

when I select this with my Slimp3 or Softsqueeze, I get a "playlist empty"
message.
If I cut and paste http://www.live365.com/play/kbcs2 into the Tune In to
Radio URL it plays with no problem on SoftSqueeze.

If I tune in with my SliMP3, I have the same problem as before: the SliMP3
play counter increments, I get no sound (or I get a loud click at the start
and then nothing.) This stream is 96kbps and I have checked my SliMP3 with
other 96 streams (out of Shoutcast) and they play.

Is there something wrong with Live365? the formatting of this pls? my
server?

I have tried all of the above suggestions (thanks guys) without any success.
I am also still to hear anything from Slimsupport. On this matter I have found Slim's customer service to be extremely poor, and am fast being turned from a very happy customer in to a very unhappy one. This simply isn't good enough Slim!

Just a quick update. On re-installing 6.2.1, Slimserver said the player needed a firmware upgrade. The player updated itself and is now version 36 (previously 28). Thinking this might make a difference I tried installing 6.2.2 again and this time it worked. Unfortunately this has done nothing to resolve my WPA-PSK difficulties, and I am still to receive any response from Slimsupport.

Oliver, I'm sorry you didn't hear from me sooner. I think you understand the bug that we ran into. Miscommunications can be very frustrating, again I'm sorry.

Please keep us posted on how the replacement unit works.
