View Full Version : What's the difference between the different versions of the Squeezebox?

I'd like to try a do-it-yourself project where I turn this old 1970's spherical radio/8-track I got from my grandparents into a squeezebox. Here are some pictures I found on the web of the model I have:

What I am wondering is if I am going to take a Squeezebox apart anyway, do I really need to get a Squeezebox 3? Could I use a Squeezebox 1 or 2 if I can find one cheaper? Does the third generation have functionality that wouldn't exist in the prevous versions, or is the only real difference in the shape?

SB2 and SB3 are +/- identical except for the housing. Go for it if you can
get it cheaper. I think the formfacter might also be easier to integrate
into your globe :-)

While SB1 already is an excellent player it lacks some of the nicest
features of the SB2/3: better display and support for the Squeezenetwork.

There's a good overview over the different models in the Wiki:

Heh, maybe you can get one of the knobs to work somehow (see many threads around about the place for more on 'the knob')? I've got an sb2 you might be able to pry from my hands...
