View Full Version : Favorite song line?

What a great new forum! How about a thread on all-time favorite song lines? Mine would be
"words are trains, for moving past what really has no name"

Artist: Prefab Sprout
Album: Swoon
Song title: "Couldn't Bear to be Special"

When I first heard this album, back in the mid-80s, I was shopping in my (at the time) favorite record store, and they were playing it. When I walked in, they had just put the album on, and I remember thinking "what is this crap?". After a couple of songs, my attitude changed to "maybe this isn't so bad after all". By the time they were ready to flip the album to the other side, I found myself needing to buy a copy. I love albums that need to grow on you to be appreciated :-)

While I'm tempted to say "Love Comes in Spurts", I'll keep the tone classy with this little couplet from Son Volt's Windfall:

Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven

Or possibly the last line from the last (almost) song of the last Beatles album...

And in the end, the love you take
is equal to the love you make.

That's either high cheese or high art; I can't decide ;-)

Elvis Costello is also a great one for really smart lyrics.

Ahhh - interesting. I didn't realise those lines were lifted but it's not surprising really, that album is full of them. To clarify, those lines aren't on the original Royksopp version of Poor Leno, just on this special version. Erland Oye is an unusual combination of DJ and singer (he actually sung the original vocals on Poor Leno, as it happens) and on his DJ-Kicks compilation he plays an amazingly eclectic selection of tracks and sings new (or borrowed) lyrics over many of them. Very crazy but extremely cool, one of my favourite albums of the last few years.

Rock'n'roll is about rebellion without a cause, it's a fight that is doomed to fail, it's getting frustrated with the system, wanting to stick it to the man, and all the time knowing that you're gonna get ground down. What better way to put it than

"I fought the law and the law won"

From the very same tune comes the fabulously overclear statement

On full blast is my radio
Radio

Up comes this guy in his flashy car
In his mouth stuck a big cigar
Needed my help said he lost his way
I never heard a word he said
To find some street, said he wanted instructions
So I turned down the music
To point out directions, guess what?
Guy jumped on me messed up my clothes
Smashed and grabbed my radio
Calling all detectives
A criminal at large smoking
A big fat cigar in a flashy car
And think him some superstar

CHORUS
Life life without music
I can't go go no
Life without music I can't go

I'm gonna get him
The last thing I do
Must get a beating
Till him red and blue

Didn't take long to catch him
Parked up car and music blasting
On the sidewalk he was dancing
Stealing the show, the people watching
Roller skate gang
Was hot on his tracks
Stick him up mister
Give me back Give me back
Give me back Give me back
My radio
Guy jumped on me messed up my clothes
Saaahed and grabbed my radio
Calling all detectives
a criminal at large smoking
a big fat cigar in a flashy car
And think him some super star

CHORUS
Life life without music
I can't go
Life life without music
I can't go

Life without music
Bimma! murder style
Dem have fe get a beatin'
Say dem have fe get a beatin'
Nothing greater nothing best
Like the music from my wireless
And the only thing that I detest
Is the man who steal my wireless
him ha fe run like a fugitive
Him ha fe run from detective
Samuel Thomas is the thief name
lie must a lead life of shame
Some a dem call him Uncle Sam
Some a dem call him Uncle Tom
Uncle Sam and Uncle Tom
Yes they are the same man
S.A.M. means "stealaway music"
T.O.M. means "thiefer of music"
The druna and the bass
Have fe move me waist
The ridim and skank
Me have JAH fe thank.
The lyrics and song
Me have fe keep me strong
Samuel Thomas him have fe get vank
Him have fe get a beatin'
Him have fe get a beatin'

"Let Righteousness cover the earth, like the water cover the sea." - Bob Marley, Revolution

"Well it's Ninth and Hennepin
All the doughnuts have names that sound like prostitutes
And the moon's teeth marks are on the sky
Like a tarp thrown all over this
And the broken umbrellas like dead birds
And the steam comes out of the grill
Like the whole goddamn town's ready to blow...
And the bricks are all scarred with jailhouse tattoos
And everyone is behaving like dogs
And the horses are coming down Violin Road
And Dutch is dead on his feet
And all the rooms they smell like diesel
And you take on the dreams of the ones who have slept here
And I'm lost in the window, and I hide in the stairway
And I hang in the curtain, and I sleep in your hat...
And no one brings anything small into a bar around here
They all started out with bad directions
And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear
"One for every year he's away", she said
Such a crumbling beauty, ah
There's nothing wrong with her that a hundred dollars won't fix
She has that razor sadness that only gets worse
With the clang and the thunder of the Southern Pacific going by
And the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet
'til you're full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin
And you spill out over the side to anyone who will listen...
And I've seen it all, I've seen it all
Through the yellow windows of the evening train..."

so many.....

Well she’s walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that’s running round
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams and fairy tales
That’s all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind.

When I’m sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free
It’s alright she says it’s alright
Take anything you want from me, anything
Anything.

I love the lyrics on Thanks Christ For The Bomb by the Groundhogs. Here's the end of the title track:

But, in the final year of that war, two big bangs settled the score,
Against Japan, who'd joined the fight, the rising sun didn't look so bright.

Since that day it's been stalemate, everyone's scared to obliterate,
So it seems for peace we can thank the bomb, so I say thank Christ for the bomb

Also one of my favourites is In The Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson:
the rusted chains of prison moons
Are shattered by the sun.
I walk a road, horizons change
The tournaments begun.
The purple piper plays his tune,
The choir softly sing;
Three lullabies in an ancient tongue,
For the court of the crimson king.

Now I wish I was in the sun some place
Instead of shacked up in this white room

sucking on a Rum & Whatever from a fresh cut pineapple bowl

Rum & Whatever by

She said that love is like the summer sky,
She told me that men are like the stars,
they leave you long before you see them go,
leave you nothing, but torn up and scarred,
But you my love, are like the warm winds,
you dried up all the tears I've cried,
I'll hold this world down in front of you,

I'll make you feel like the King of July

Have resisted posting this so far but listening to it last night made me think of this thread.

Having just gone through a messy break up this song is one of the things that has kept me going. It is the "waitress" song by that sublime aussie band "the waifs"

"So now when I make love I make love to myself
I got no disease so it's good for my health
I got my hands in my pants – down my calvin kleins
I don’t need you no more baby, I can c**e every time"

However probably has to be heard on the live CD to fully appreciate the emotion behind it.

Following on from the previous post - Not a single line but a whole song!

The Genitalia of a Fool

Everybody's got a hobby
Everybody's got a schtick
Please consider me eccentric
Don't think of me as sick

Didn't mean to spoil your party
I didn't mean to be uncool
But I'm standing here holding
The genitalia of a fool

'Cause I thought if I exposed myself
You'd fall in love with me
But when I burst in
To my chagrin
You had company

I'm afraid I've shown your family
the wrong kind of family jewels
'Cause I'm standing here holding
the genitalia of a fool

Well I guess the show is over
so I'll just go on home
I'll pack my prize possession
it's the nicest thing I own

Didn't mean to scare the children
or make your grandma drool
but I'm standing here holding
the genitalia of a fool

And I pray that you'll forgive me and try to understand
But I'm afraid you'll always picture me with my whole world in my hands
and I'll go through life just wondering how fate could be so cruel
Left me standing here holding the genitalia of a fool

Now I wish that you were holding,
the genitalia of this fool.

Sharp and open
Leave me alone
And sleeping less every night
As the days become heavier and weighted
Waiting
In the cold light
A noise
A scream tears my clothes as the figurines tighten
With spiders inside them
And dust on the lips of a vision of hell
I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year

A hundred other words blind me with your purity
Like an old painted doll in the throes of dance
I think about tomorrow
Please let me sleep
As I slip down the window
Freshly squashed fly
You mean nothing
You mean nothing

I can lose myself in Chinese art and American girls
All the time
Lose me in the dark
Please do it right
Run into the night
I will lose myself tomorrow
Crimson pain
My heart explodes
My memory in a fire
And someone will listen
At least for a short while

I can never say no to anyone but you

Too many secrets
Too many lies
Writhing with hatred
Too many secrets
Please make it good tonight
But the same image haunts me
In sequence
In despair of time

I will never be clean again
I touched her eyes
Pressed my stained face
I will never be clean again

Touch her eyes
Press my stained face
I will never be clean again
I will never be clean again
I will never be clean again
I will never be clean again

I only made it partway through this thread, but I was surprised to see nobody citing Leonard Cohen:

The ponies run, the girls are young,
The odds are there to beat.
You win a while, and then it’s done –
Your little winning streak.
And summoned now to deal
With your invincible defeat,
You live your life as if it’s real,
A thousand kisses deep.

Complete song again (sorry)... has to be done:

She used to call me baby,
I thought she was such a lady,
But my how things have changed since time's moved on,
I'd give her my last dollar,
Now all she'll do is holler,
Oh my life has become a country song...

I've learned she can resist me,
By the way she always disses me,
And comes to bed at night with that cold cream on,
Sometimes I might feel frisky,
But these days it's just too risky,
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long...

All day long, it goes on and on...
If a tree fell in the forest,
And she didn't hear it,
Would I still be wrong?
I guess I should admit it,
She ain't ever gonna quit it,
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long...

(spoken) I remember when her eyes were so blue and shiny,
You oughta see what's happened to her heiney! (her what?)
Man, that thing is big enough to land a small plane on!
I used to roll her in the clover,
Thank god those days are over!
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long...

All day long, she goes on and on,
If some day they drop the big one,
I'd say "sweet jesus, she's gonna finally leave me alone!"
It's alright if we say it,
Cos the radio won't play it,
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long...

It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long...
