View Full Version : Using ADD to add a single song

Folks,

The most frequent thing I want to do is to add a single
song to the Now Playing playlist. But the (documented)
behavior of the ADD button is to add the entire album
to the Now Playing playlist... so I'm constantly getting
a whole album's worth of songs added to Now Playing
when I want to add just one. Is there a way to do this
"correctly?"

A more intuitive way for ADD to work would be:
Displaying a song -> ADD -> Add single song to Now Playing
Displaying an album -> ADD -> Add album's worth of songs to Now Playing
Displaying an artist -> ADD -> Add all songs by artist to Now Playing

Has anybody thought of this or made modifications to
make this work?

That's exactly what I would have expected it to do so I'm glad you've made me read the instructions.

I'd be interest in that modification. How about suggesting it to Slim Devices?

Server Settings > Behaviour > PLAY OTHER SONGS IN ALBUM

allows you to choose between the single track or the whole album.

That's exactly what it does do for me. Sounds like the docs are wrong - where did you see this described?

I *wish* mine behaved like yours... mine acts as documented
in the user manual:

http://slimdevices.com/documentation/Squeezebox-v3-Owners-Guide.pdf

Page 12, step #5:

"When you find an album, artist, genre or song you want to listen to,
press PLAY to play all the songs associated with the displayed item."

So if I select a song, it plays "all the songs associated with the displayed
item," for example all of the songs in the album I just browsed to.
I spend half my time deleting unwanted songs from the Now Playing
playlist.

Thanks a bunch-- that's what I wanted it to do!

I think the docs are right, we're just interpreting them differently. The songs "associated" with an artist are all of the songs by that artist. The songs "associated" with an album are all the songs on that album and the only song "associated" with a song is the song itself. Thus, my installation (and to be honest, every one I've ever used) works as described/intended.

So what we need to do is figure out what's gone wrong in your case. First off - what operating system, slimserver version and player are you using? Secondly, please describe the exact sequence of actions you're using to see the problem.

Hang on - I just noticed in your original post you said ADD, whilst in the recent followup you quoted the manual talking about PLAY. They are different. ADD works as I described, PLAY has a switch to make it take the whole album if you want to - look in Server Settings/Behavior/Play Other Songs In Album.

I understand the difference between PLAY and ADD, and
with your suggested server setting the Squeezebox works
as I think it should.

I think the trouble I got into was using PLAY to play (and
add to Now Playing) the first song, but because I hit PLAY
I got all the album's songs added to the playlist. On subsequent
ADDs, I added the individual songs I wanted, but didn't
know how all the unwanted songs got added. Now that
I've set the server settings to play only the song, not the
album, both PLAY and ADD should add only the selected
song to the Now Playing playlist.

Thanks for your help!

the doc's for the remote state this about the ADD button.

ADD—Press this button to add the displayed selection to the end of the current playlist.

is there a way to make the ADD button add the selection to the top of the current playlist?

press-and-hold ADD puts the item into the playlist after the current
playing track.
