When I double click the SlimServer icon on the desktop, an icon appears in the system tray with a picture of the SqueezeBox and a message saying "Starting SlimServer". After a while, the yellow box disappears and if I right click on the icon I get a menu with "Starting SlimServer" grayed out and "Go to Slim Devices Web Site" and "Exit" appearing in normal type.

Does this mean that SlimServer has started or is it still trying to start??? I had assumed that some sort of software would start and appear on the screen, but maybe it doesn't.

I also can't log onto SlimServer from the Squeezebox. (Note, I have no problems logging onto my home network from my laptop, Palm, etc)

Means it's still trying to start. Right clicking on the tray icon gives options to 'open slimserver' 'stop slimserver' as well as 'go to site' and 'exit' after fully started.

If you have a browser window open, slimserver will automatically take focus from it. If not, you right click, open slimserver, and your default browser launches.

Is it still scanning from initial install, if so for how long?

Another indication of its status is the blue
display in the little tray icon.

If the display is blinking, SlimServer is still
trying to start.

If it's dark, SlimServer started then stopped.

OK, so it's still starting, but it never stops starting!!! Should I reinstall the software? Are there other things that can stop the software from starting?

I don't know of any services that will block it,
but that does not mean there aren't any...

Go to

Start - Run and type "services.msc"

Find SlimServer. If it says "Started",
right-click and select "Stop", although you may
want to try "Restart". From the right-click menu,
select "Properties" and make sure that it says
"Startup type: Automatic".

Now try restarting or starting it from the
services window.

I believe when you first install it, it has some
difficulty starting.

This has come up a couple of times before.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19809&highlight=reinstall

Uninstall / reinstall seems to get most people there.

The other common cause is a firewall that won't let slimserver connect to the SB. Do you have a firewall installed ?

I don't think there was ever an explanation for this, but a couple of people here have reported a similar problem - fixed by uninstalling, re-installing and starting again.

Sounds a bit like voodoo I know but it has to be worth a try
