View Full Version : No sound from Squeezebox after reflash

I upgraded to SlimServer 6.2.1 a while ago.

I forget the exact language, but some instruction stated that squeezeboxes might possibly need to be flashed with updated firmware.

I have two recently aquired squeezebox I models which I purchased used that were working fine at the time -- One wireless version and the other wired.

Even though I had no message informing me that I needed to reflash them, not knowing their age or history, I figured "What the Hell" and reflashed them anyway.

Since the reflash, the wired one works great, but the wireless version doesn't produce any sound.

It connects to the slimserver fine, you can control everything as if it's working, but there's no sound from the outputs.

Previously when it had been working, I only used the RCA outputs. Since I've had this problem, I've tried both the RCA and coax digital outputs with no success. (though... I had never tried any digital outputs before.)

Any suggestions?

Anyway I can try a different -- perhaps older flash -- that still should be compatable with 6.2.1?

This is a little confusing.

SlimServer has a very smart firmware update feature.
The firmware is included with SlimServer and if it's
different from that in the Squeezebox, it updates.

So you can't force a firmware update like with a
router, it updates automatically based on what version
of SlimServer you're running.

To get back to older firmware you have to roll back to
a previous version of SlimServer.

I'm sorry for the confusion in my post. I'm working 60+ hours a week implementing a Business Process Management automation project, and I don't have time to do much (which is why this happened in November, and I'm just getting around to posting this now)

The instructions I read when I downloaded 6.2, told me that I would be automatically prompted if my squeezeboxes needed a firmware update. The same instructions however, informed me that if I wished to reflash the firmware, I could hold the brightness button on the remote.

I was half expecting to be prompted, as these were bought used 6 months or so previously. I got no such prompt, but to be on the safe side (which now looks like an idiotic move) I forced a reflash of both squeezeboxes by holding down the brightness button.

My wired squeezebox works fine. My wireless, now appears visually to function fine, but produces no sound. One thing that may or may not be a clue, is that I had my wireless squeezebox set up for large fonts, and after the reflash it still had large fonts. I would expect a firmware reflash to restore settings to default.

I guess I could roll back to an earlier version of Squeezebox, however I do appreciate the bug-fixes/improvements of the latest version.

I'm planning in the next month or so, to move my slimserver from my current Win XP pro machine to a new Linux Server with a Terabyte of redundant RAID 3 storage place (plus 80GB boot drive)

(by the way... got 5, 250 GB WD SATA drives for $100 each and a Revo 64 5 port RAID controller for $180 -- A Terabyte of redundant storage for $680!)

So... I'm not sure of the proper course of action to get my wireless squeezebox up and running again. In fact I'm not 100% certain it is the reflash, but it would be an amazing coincidence if it weren't.

Ah work. Gets in the way of all this leisure time!

OK. I'm used to the device automatically prompting
me.

However, your devices should all still work fine under
6.2. There are some things you should try:

1. The volume settings got altered between 6.1 and
6.2. It may be sitting at 0. Increase the volume.

2. Reset the unit. Hold the "ADD" key on the remote
while unplugging and replugging the power.

3. Rewrite the Xilinx chip. Hold the "1" key while
power-cycling as above.

If none of those work, can you verify that SlimServer
is sending material to the device? Your router or
firewall should show activity.

Try playing it from the web interface.

But no sound is kind of rare and may be some sort of
hardware issue, an e-mail to support (at) slimdevices
(dot) com may be in order.

The same problem occur with my SB3 (wi-fi).
Reflashing the Xilinx chip by holding the "1" key while
power-cycling did the trick.
But it takes more than 5 times to get back to file.
I reported the problem to support but they didn't have a solution.
Something don't initialize properly in the Xilinx, that's my theory.

Hi,
I do not get a sound after the reflash and even the factory reset (it work before).

I see the song I like to listen too but the VU meter does not move. I believe the song does not start to play. I tried the radio but also no success.

Who can help?

Firmware 29, Version 6.2.2 (latest download). Wireless connect & Digital connect (volume control disabled).

Downgrade to v28
Reprogram the xilinx
Upgrade to v29 again

Hi,
what is the procedure to downgrade to firmware 28 and where do I get the software from?

restart.

Thank you. It worked for me but I had to reflash the Chip after the firmware update.

I guess I can now upgrade to 6.2.2 again.

Firmware 35 is in the latest nightly and should fix this issue (and a few others) so you shouldn't need to downgrade anymore.

Same problem with firmware 37.
I could playback via SqueezeNetwork, but not sound at all in slimserver via my flac files or Internet radio.
Reflashing the xilinx dont seem to work, I try more than 20 times, whitout success.
What'wrong ?
Reverting to 6.2.1 works for a while and I end up with the same problem after several power off.

I want my MTV...sorry my SB3

FYI Everything is working fine with Softsqueeze the problem seems to originate from the xilinx.

Don't try only reflashing the Xilinx, try a complete reset - press and hold ADD while unplugging and replugging the power.

It's solved stuttering issues for some - "no sound" might be related:

Thanks Mark,
I just want to be sure,
could you confirm me the correct sequence.
1-Install the latest Silmserver software (ex;6.51)
2-Upgrade to the latest firmware (hold Brightness)
3-Power Cycle-Hold "1" - ReFlash xilinx
4-Power Cycle-Hold "Add"-Reset to default value

I try several time to reset to default value but necessarly in this order.

I`m now back to 6.2.1, I got sound output now.

Thanks Mark,
I just want to be sure,

1-Install the latest Silmserver software (ex;6.51)

Well 6.5 has bugs of its own, it's beta/experimental software.

6.2.2 is much more stable.

2-Upgrade to the latest firmware (hold Brightness)

Only when your Squeezebox prompts you.

3-Power Cycle-Hold "1" - ReFlash xilinx
4-Power Cycle-Hold "Add"-Reset to default value

Generally you shouldn't have to do this, but if you're encountering no sound or stuttering problems it's worth a try. Also I suspect that a factory reset flashes Xilinx anyway - can anyone confirm?

Although no sound and stuttering can also be caused by other problems:

Most obvious being firewalling port 9000, or a broken firewall (:: cough:: nvidia...) mangling packets.

These would not necessarily affect softsqueeze, especially not on localhost, since it wouldn't be going through the same firewall rules.

I can confirm that a factory reset does NOT reprogram the Xilinx, it
simply resets the flash settings to their factory defaults.
