I have been having a problem with loud white noise / squeekey awful sounding stuff between tracks when I play albums ripped with iTunes using Apple lossless and played on my Squeezebox 2 wireless.

I am connecting the optical out from the squeezebox to a Pany digital receiver that does the D/A.

The same tracks played through an airport express via iTunes -> optical out to the Pany = no problems at all.

I tried using ALAC according to this thread http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?AppleLosslessUnix

But all I get is white noise all the time so I had to revert to the previous settings.

I don't want to make any changes that will downgrade the audio quality.

Any ideas from the experts?

Ok - surely I"m not the only person that is experiencing these problems with Apple Lossless files?!?!?!

I was able to switch to alac for my decoder for all of the apple lossless files and I have them streamed as wav files....what else can I try?

Also tried uninstall/reinstall (updated to 6.5 beta)...nothing.

Help?

One last time - does anybody have apple lossless files streaming without white noise between tracks?

I'm using Apple Lossless on OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.4(Intel). I have a little over 300 discs ripped using iTunes. I haven't had any problems with white noise. I have an SB3 and am running SS 6.2.1 on the 10.3.9 machine and SS 6.5.1b1 on the Intel machine. I use the digital coax output into an HK AVR-230. Oh, and firmware version 28. Whew.

In short: It all works fine for me.

Well I'm glad it seems to work. I just can't figure out why all of my gaps turn into white noise. My specs

iMac G5 10.4.4
SlimServer 6.2.2 or 6.5.1b1 (tried both)
same ~ 250 discs ripped using iTunes AppleLossless
Stored on external firewire HD
Streamed via AP Extreme
SB2 optical into Panny SAXR70

The white noise is a killer!

Oh yea, the same files streamed through an AP Express to the Panny - no problems with white noise at all.

I use ALAC and have had no problems at all. Mac Mini running OSX 10.4.4 + Slimserver 6.2.2 with music on external La Cie HD, Netgear WGR614 Router + SB3 and 2 x SB2. SB3 uses optical digital out into Musical Fidelity DAC. SB2s use analog out into Arcam and Cambridge Audio amps.
