View Full Version : Feature Request - Play Entire Various Artists Album by Artist

The title of this message doesn't describe what I'm looking for very well, but it would be very convenient if playing an entire "various artists" album were an option of the Browse Artists function.

Right now, if you Browse Artists, and then arrive at the artist you're looking for, clicking the right arrow button will display the "various artists" album title. Clicking the Play button at this point will play the artist's particular track from the "various artists" album, but not the entire album.

I would like to be able to click the right arrow one more time to see the track title, and then at that point, be able to click the Up or Down arrows on the remote to cycle between playing either the artist's particular track on the album, or the entire album.

You are almost there...

If you click right arrow to see the info for the track, you can then navigate up/down to the Album and from there you will see all tracks associated with that album. You can play all tracks by pressing play on the album name.

Excellent! Thanks! Still too many clicks, but ... oh well.

Seems quite intuitive to me. It's more powerfull this way, as you could navigate to Composer, Band, etc tags to browse the songs by that artist.

Eg. If I navigate to Artist "Ben Harper" -> Album "I Am Sam Soundtrack" -> "6. Stawberry Fields Forever" (the only track by Ben Harper on that album), I can then right click once more to display info for that track. From there, I can browse or play other music by the artist (Ben Harper), other music by the original composer (The Beatles), the rest of the album, other songs from year 2002, or other songs in the Pop genre.

Note that I think there is a preference setting that you could select such that when you press play on the individual track, it would play the whole album. Not sure if it would work in this context (it might only attempt to play all tracks by Ben Harper on the I Am Sam album - not sure).

I hadn't noticed the additional functionality of being able to "click right" on track info items (like album, artist, year, genre) to browse further.

However, I've noticed a problem.

The technique you described works for my popular recordings, but does not work for my classical recordings. Example:

1. Browse Music -->
2. Browse Artists -->
3. Debussy, Claude (really a composer tag, but I've checked the option to include composers in the artist listing) -->
4. La Mer; Trois Nocturnes
5. La Mer - De l’aube a midi sur la mer -->
6. Title: La Mer - De l’aube a midi sur la mer

At this point, if I click Up or Down, the display scrolls through album, year, genre, etc. just as it does with popular recordings, and it displays a little triangle to the right of items that have similar results. However, if I click right on one of these items, nothing happens.

The only difference between the tags of my popular and classical selections is that I usually do not include the Artist tag in my classical selections.

nothing at all, or does it at least do a quick bump animation?

Quick bump animation. I think the server knows there are additional items to browse as it is rendering the little arrow to the right of the text. Do you think this has something to do with me having blank "Artist" tags for most of my classical files?

As I said, this behavior is seen only when I attempt to browse into the tag info for a track. Otherwise, browsing Artists behaves as expected.

I can't say for sure. The code doesn't show anything abvious that
would link to this case. There is a selection item that tracks the
artisst, but this is to keep the first item displayed in the list as
the original track. The find seems to be only using the matching
artist/year/genre that you are trying to navigate. Perhaps the
contributor isnt being combined when doing the find for matching
artists.

I'll experiment tonight. First, I'll check four or five "pop" selections to make sure that I can, indeed, "browse into" their tag info. Then, I'll check four or five classical selections to confirm that I CANNONT browse into their tag info.

Then, I'll add the Artist tag to a few of the classical selections, clear and rescan, and then see if I can, at that point, browse into their tag info.

I'll report the results later tonight.

once you have all of those details, please file a bug report
(bugs.slimdevices.com) so that the information isn't lost. Attach a
small sample track that causes the problem too (so that a dev can
replicate)

cheers,

I have confirmed that you cannot browse to related songs via Song Info if the current file has an empty Artist tag. Maybe there's an issue with a WHERE clause someplace. I submitted a bug report:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2841

I attempted to attach two FLAC files to the bug report, but had no luck uploading them. Too big, probably. (~4 MB each)
