I'm new to Slimeserver and couldn't find the answer to my question in the FAQs or forum.

When you perform an album search from a Squeezebox, is the Slimserver itself perform the search and returning the output to the Squeezebox or is the Squeezebox itself accessing the database and performing the search itself?

Are all of the commands/menus that you select and use on the squeezebox local in the Squeezebox or is Slimserver sending the menu text, etc to the squeexebox for display (i.e, is the squeezebox a dumb client?)

The Slim Device is really dumb. All the brains are in the server.
The server sends the text to display, does the searching and all that.
The newest SqueezeBoxes have a tiny amount of brains and
can talk to the SqueezeNetwork.

Everything else is done on the server.

Just about anything that isn't music decoding is done on the server. The Squeezebox is dumb... or to be more polite, "slim".

(This does lead to neat tricks like the 'lazy search' plugin... it's a feature that the client is slim since the server code is opensource and had lots of plugins.)

Thanks Guys. I'm running Slimeserver on my Infrant X6 NAS and noticed it gets a little bogged when doing searches from multiple clients. I have a Roku M1001 that responds a lot slower talking to Slimserver vs iTunes (iTunes is running on PC so not a fair comparison). I'm not sure if the Roku is a smart client when talking to iTunes or WMC but I definetly see it slow down signficantly in command response when emulating a squeezebox.
