View Full Version : Update On White Noise Bacground Issue/Bug

This may be related to bug 1718.

I reported a while ago occasional unbearably loud 'background' noise that
happens occasionally when starting a new song on my system, usually when
synched with SoftSqueeze.

I uusally have to restart Slimserver to get rid of it.

I was at a friend's house the other day with whom I 'shared' some files
recently, when it started to happen on all my songs, and only my songs - he
said that this had happened occasionally.

The only unique feature of my songs as that I always set the MP3 vilume to
MAXIMUM on iTunes to get round the iPod EU volume restriction. On a whim I
selected all songs in iTunes and set them back to NORMAL volume. It worked,
and the problem has not recurred.

I am busy resetting all my songs at home to 80% VOL increase only, I need
some boost, and will report back. But this might help solve some of these
bugs previously reported...

But bug 1718 shows as fixed.
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1718

But it clearly isn't fixed...

But I can't find anywhere where people filed bugs for the newer occurrances, perhaps because it happens rarely and they're waiting to reproduce.

A number of other people mention itunes volume adjustment ... that may be a clue

This is definitely still a problem. I posted this in an earlier thread. All MP3s on which I have used the iTunes volume adjust feature generate a hideously loud white noise when played back on my SB3 if the SB3's Volume Adjustment was turned on.

As a test, I took a track that sounded fine on the Squeezebox:

1) Increased the volume slightly in iTunes
2) Set the volume adjustment back to zero in iTunes
3) Rescanned my library in Slimserver
4) Played the song on the Squeezebox
5) Nearly destroyed my speakers

For more information please see my original THREAD.

No one’s given me a solution yet other than shutting off SB3's smart Volume Adjustment feature.

How did you reset the volume? I tried moving the slider back to zero (the center position) and it still didn't work. For me, no matter what the volume setting is, even if it's been slightly raised, I get the white noise problem.

I'm not sure you're going to find a "solution". It should never happen. It appears to be a bug, so no one's likely to tell you to just turn off some feature.

There seem to be one to several ways to trigger this white noise problem. iTunes volume adjustment is one, but there are other people who have had this problem who have been listening to the radio, so we likely have several causes for the same symptom.

The problem until this point is that no one could reproduce it - it seemed to happen at random.

Now that you have a reproduceable case, you (or someone) needs to file a bug report, in order to get the bug squashed. Can you do this?

If you don't feel up to it, I could help you through it. Or you could send me the file and I could do it.

Oh, a question that seems to come up in this area: what output are you using?
Headphone?
RCA?
digital?

Have you the ability to check? Is the noise on all 3?

This should be fixed in the 6.2.2 nightlies.

Since about a week ago.

If you're still having an issue - can you send me one of the files?

Thanks.

Ya gotta love UNIX, where else do you wonder whether
you can kill a zombie spawned by a daemon's fork?

I've just realised that I haven't had an issue since about then; but at
about the same time I did reduce the iTunes volume of the whole collection
from 100% increase to about 80% to see if it would help.
So; one of those actions worked! But which one?

Would you like me to put the volume back up and try to repeat the fault?

Yes - please.

I assume you are using iTunes to alter the metadata of your files, but not
"Using iTunes" in SlimServer?

On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place.

I'll try it.
I am both using iTunes, and "using iTunes". Why?
