View Full Version : Updated Slimserver and now does not read tags?

I'm relativley new to the Slimserver. I updated to the latest nightly build of 6.2.2, rescaned my library and now get this:

Your music library contains 1 album with 2511 songs by 1 artist.

Previous to this everything worked properly with slimserver reading the tagging info and breaking the files into the proper albums/artists/songs.

I updated because the version I had did not have a volume bug fix that was done in the past couple of days. I have both re-installed directly over the existing installation and uninstalled and done a fresh installation of the new nightly 6.2.2. The previous build I had was from 12/26.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

There are two ways to scan. A partial scan just updates some stuff, a full scan wipes out the database and does a full scan.

Sometimes when switching versions, the database has changed enough that the old data confuses it.

Try a full scan.

I have done the clear library and rescan numerous times now... same problem?

I'm having the same problem -- since "upgrading" to 6.2.2. Here it is:

Albums I have scanned in now show up with songs in random order. In some case, not all songs appear.

Yes, I have rechecked tag names. Yes, I have reset the iTunes path back and forth and created a new iTunes library. No change.

One is particularly frustrating: searched by artist, it shows the album and then only one song. Search by album, it shows all songs, but the songs out of order. How crazy lame is that?

I have done multiple clear and rescans. Of course, Slimserver is not smart enough to provide a progress bar or completion note (at least not on a Mac) -- downsides to this web based system, which I have grown to dislike. I've tried letting it scan for half an hour, for a full hour, and even overnight.

No changes.

Smacks of a nasty bug. Ideas?

I am having a similar problem with partial scanning of my library when I upgraded to 6.5b. I told it to clear and rescan (several times0, but only a partial library is created OR the server will shut down 15 seconds after starting scan. I thought this might be a 6.5b issue so I tried un-installing 6.5b and then re-installing 6.2, but same problem exists. I am running MAC OSX on a Powerbook. I would like to know how to resolve this issue too.

OK. For everyone who is having this same problem, we need to see some information so we can try to localize the problem.

1. What operating system are you running?
2. What server version? It'll be a number like 6.5.1 or 6.2.2.
3. What subversion. It'll be a 4 digit number like 5448.
4. Is there any commonality (that you can see) between the missing files? Like, are they all MP3 files? Or FLAC files?
5. Are you all using iTunes?

04dgmsilv: You said there is only one album. What is the name given for that album?

highdudgeon: When you say there is no completion note: During the scan, the Home page (left pane) should say "Slimserver is scanning your music". When it's done, it should say "Your music library contains so many albums, artists and songs." Does it not do that?

macdaddy: when the server shuts down, what is the error message?

OS: Win XP SP2
SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 5491 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252
I only use FLAC files, tagged while encoded in FLAC.
No itunes on this computer.

It seems in my case Slimserver is taking the entire file name and treating that as the song title. Then it assumes no artist and no album. So when I browse album for instance, all 2500 songs are under 'No Album'.

I did have a previous nightly build of 6.2.2 from either 12/26 or 12/27 that worked fine. No longer have the executable to try to re-install that particular version though.

I had a similar problem recently. It gave the appearance that
flac.exewasn't installed properly, since it could see the files but
none of their
metadata (and could not play them).

I tried multiple rescans to no effect, and verified that flac.exe was fine.
I also tried installing 6.2.1 and an earlier 6.2.2 nightly from mid-December
that had been working before. None of it helped.

Eventually I uninstalled and removed the c:\program files\slimserver
directory entirely. Then I rebooted and installed the 6.2.2 nightly from
mid-December. This fixed my problem.

Normally when I update to a new level, I don't uninstall the old one -- I
figured the installer was taking care of that. Given this latest
experience, maybe that was an incorrect assumption on my part. Of course,
I'd been doing periodic updates this way since I first got my SB1, so maybe
there was just some cumulative effect.

Anyway, you may want to try uninstalling and removing the old SlimServer
directory entirely. This will have the side effect of losing any server and
player settings, so you may want to record your current settings if you
don't know them offhand.

To further clarify:

In my case, I noticed that my library had all of my MP3 files correctly.
Only my FLAC files had the problem you describe (that is, not paying any
attention to their tags).

I'm also running Windows XP SP2.

Thanks for the info. I will try that this morning and see what happens.

04dgmsilv
2006-01-02, 07:41
I uninstalled, rebooted, then installed 6.2.2 (1/1/06 build).
Same thing, would not read the FLAC tags and the songs will not play.

Uninstalled that, rebooted, then installed the standard 6.2.1, works fine, back to normal. Songs play, broken down into albums/artists.

I would like to take advangtage some of the updates from the maintenance builds, but???

Let me know if there is any other info I could post to help someone more knowledgable understand whats going on here...

Yesterday Mitch suggested

Did you do that? Actually remove all files in the slimserver directory?

It's possible (and it has happened to me too) that the mistake was in the installer/uninstaller code. That some fragment of the old system was left and incorrectly merged with the new one.

Of course, this "shouldn't" happen, but it has in the past, and maybe did again.

04dgmsilv
2006-01-02, 07:48
Yes, each time I manually deleted the c:/programfiles/slimserver directory.

Should I try to install the latest nightly 6.2.2 and see what happens?

Michaelwagner
2006-01-02, 07:53
I don't know what got checked in yesterday, so I don't know if anyone was working in this area or not.

So it might yield results, or it may not. I can't tell.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll probably wait a bit then try again in a few days. Is the proper way to 'update' slimserver just to shut it down, then run the exectuable right over the existing installation. i.e. no uninstall?

Michaelwagner
2006-01-02, 08:19
yes, that is supposed to work. And it has the advantage of keeping your preferences. Most of the time, it works fine. But it has failed from time to time, because of installer problems, which is why the other option was suggested.

Ack, just upgraded to latest nightly, same problem here - cannot read FLAC tags. And unfortunately rolling back to 6.2.1 did not solve the problem.

Looks like I'll have to uninstall/reinstall. :-(

Tried to use latest build (2006-01-02) on a WinXP SP2 machine. Installed over 6.2.1.

I tried it out because apparently bug 2623 had been corrected:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2623

It seems to me this problem might be related to that bug fix as all my FLAC files now have "No Album" tags, but Mp3tag indicates they are fine, and my EAC FLAC encoding arguments are correct and worked before.

Is it possible to create a bug report for a nightly version?

I see this too, for 6.2.2, not 6.5

kdf:

I have rescanned at least a half-dozen times,
alternating between "Clear library and rescan
everything" and "Look for new and updated music".

When I encounter database trouble, that's the
first thing I do. Usually it corrects it, but in
this case it doesn't.

I'm wondering if this bug is related to the other
problems with the latest 6.2.2 nightlies reported
in this thread:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19622

Note the bug fix was 12-31, which seems to jive
with the newer problems.

sure, I'm with you on that. however, a clean install of 6.2.1 should
clear it up. By reverting to svn5450 it clears up for me just by doing
a clear library and rescan. if you installed 6.2.1 over top, maybe try
with an uninstall first. There are two current problems as I see it.
bug2623 does not seem to be the issue (reverting to just before that
fix changes nothing). The two problems are an out of order listing for
ccompilations (already a bug report) and the no album for flac (I'm
thinking, now that this is change 5482.

Please be patient. I'm sure dan is working on this two, and whatever i
can find out, I'll be passing onto him anyway.

when the server shuts down, what is the error message?

Thanks for responding. I am glad to see that your advice has helped the others resolve their problems. I have tried to clean and rescan, have deleted the slimserver files from the library and re-installed, but still have the same problems with only a partial scan of the library.

I am running Mac OSX on a MacPowerbook with an Airport Extreme wireless router. My current Slim Server version is 6.5b1 from the 01-01-06 nightly updates. I use the most up to date version of iTunes for Mac. I have tried telling Slim Server to use iTunes and to not use iTunes yet still have similar results of partial scanning of library. I am at work, but tonight will post the remaining information you requested about the error message on the web browser when Slim Server shuts down.

I have this problem too. No error messages or anything, just incorrect
/ jumbled / missing data for Browse Albums / artists etc, though 'Browse
Music Folder' is OK and the album artwork appears to be correct.

See answers to your questions in line.

I had the same problem upon switching to the Jan 2 nightly. I'll
download the Jan 3 nightly tonight as I believe it is supposed to fix
this problem.

(It's kind of a shame that the 6.2.2 branch "regressed" in this way. I
thought the idea was to have it pick up tested bug fixes only, with new
features and major changes going into 6.5.)

In any event, I downloaded it to see if a particular problem I saw with
6.2.1 (the latest release version) was still there.

The problem: if you have a genre with all albums in the genre having
"Various Artists" (and assuming you have the "Various Artists" setting
turned on), then when you go to browse genres and choose that genre you
don't see anything on the page other than an artist/album count. That
is, you don't see the "Various Artists" link, so you're kind of at a
dead end at that point.

Seems like an edge case that may not have been tested -- for the most
part people are going to have many "standard" albums in a genre and then
a few compilations. But in my case I created a new genre called
"Northern Soul" to cover a number of compilation albums of that type,
and I was surprised to find that I couldn't browse the genre to find and
then listen to any of them. So I downloaded the latest 6.2.2 nightly
before filing a bug report -- but then got hit with the messed up tag
problem.

So this is a heads up on a possible bug with a bit more testing tonight
after I download the Jan 3 nightly.

it was a tested fix, actually. However, as 6.5 is so diverged an extra
change snuck in there, accidentally. I guess Dan is human after all.

I just installed the Jan 3 6.2.2 nightly and this problem is no longer a problem. (Also the various tag reading issues that people reported with the Jan 2 nightly are squashed.)

One minor issue remains: the "1 album with 144 songs by 2 artists" summary that appears for a Various Artists listing is invariably completely wrong, i.e., not even close. Sometimes it shows "0 albums with 0 songs", other times a very low number of albums and songs on a page that clearly shows dozens or even hundreds of albums. (Note that I deleted the database and the template cache folder and allowed a complete rebuild before testing.)

Functionally all seems to be well; this is just a display issue affecting Various Artists pages. I think, though I'm not 100% sure, that this display was correct in 6.2.1.
