I have to admit that I'm rather chicken-hearted - I did almost all of my
tests using perl 5.8 :-/. But today I did the step back (as I'm using an
SME server) to 5.6 - with mixed results. Here are some of my observations
differing from running 6.0 (03/06 nightly):

- there's no order in the folder browsing nor in the artist or album list:
22 Pistepirkko
a-ha
Aerosmith
Cesaria Evora
Eagle eye Cherry
California Guitar Trio
Chat noir, chat blanc - Sound Track
Ella Fitzgerald - The Essential Collection
Elliott Smith - either or
Elton John
Elvis Presley
Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra - Unza Unza Time
Enya - A Day without Rain
Coldplay
Commitments - Original Soundtrack
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Gold
Eric Clapton
Erykah Badu
Eyes Wide Shut - Soundtrack
Air
Alanis Morissette
Aldo Romano, Michel Benita, Glenn Ferris, Paolo Fresu
Ali Farka Toure

- Umlauts & Co. don't show up in folder browsing ("Bj,rk" instead of
"Björk"). I run SlimServer -d_info -d_file and was astonished to find the
following entries in the log:

This seems to be recognized correctly?!?

- Opening a folder containing an umlaut in its name won't show any
subfolders/files (but it does when browsing artists/albums)

All I've said so far is concerning the web interface. Start
Squeezebox/SoftSqueeze: all my umlauts are displayed correctly on the
devices!

Can I do anything to improve perl 5.6 compatibility?

Is there really nobody out there using perl 5.6 and having these problems?

As I still can't get to run perl 5.8 on my server I'm a little lost...

Hi Micheal,

i notice the same things:

the order when browsing the music folder is not ok. I jut noticed, that
I have the same behavior in Browsing Interprets, Genres, Albums and so
on. I also don't have the umlauts in the web interface. On the
squeezebox display everything is Ok. I'm using Perl 5.6.1 but not on an
SME Server.

But I think I can't help with that, because I have no knowledge with
Perl or web development.

Best Regards
Stefan

As I thought perl 5.6.x without proper utf8 support might be a dead end I
invested my time in installing perl 5.8.x alongside 5.6.x. And I finally
got it working :-). Same machine, same collection different perl version -
all those sorting problems are gone.

If you have the possibility to compile stuff on your server (or another,
similar machine, or VMWare) this might be the better way to go.

Hi Michael,

fo me this is not a really big problem, because I do all the file- and
playlistmanagment with itunes. For me this is much more comfortable than
the web interface. I hope, that there will be perl 5.8 for my server in
the near future.

For me it was the web-interface that lead me to the slimdevices' home page
in the very first place. I was looking for a server (web) based music
collection management as I'm using several different computers and I
wanted a lightweight player (intended to use a Zaurus pda which has been
degraded to my favourite remote control since :-)) to be connected to my
stereo. And my MusicMatch Jukebox' database grew too big to be used on a
wireless connection. I guess it was on the Netjuke's mailing list that I
first heard about SlimServer :-).

Little important to the developpers, though...

I found out something really funny. I go to browse albums and then
forward one or two pages. everything is sorted very well since then.
when I go back to the first page the sorting is wrong. It seems, that
the problem only occurs on the first few pages. So in my opinion sorting
can be done and this is a bug in the web interface.
I use the standard web interface.
I hope someone at slimdevices can fix this.

What version of SME Server are you running?

I don't think so as I now have 5.8 and 5.6 on my machine. The same
slimserver installation does behave very differently with these two perl
versions. It's not in the web interface, but rather in the logic behind it
(in the server code).

He's not using SME, but some other distro
(http://www.eisfair.org/index_e.htm).

Me, I'm on 6.0 (with a lot of additional stuff...).

Stefan & Michael - could you send me your slimserversql.db files?

Thanks.
