I just got my SB3, which i am trying to set up in wireless ad-hoc mode. It seems to connect ok, but it's asking me to "Enter the IP address for your Slimserver". How do know what this is? Thanks.

Assuming Windows - Open a console on your server and type IPCONFIG /ALL
- the output will contain all the information of all your network
connectors. Just be sure to pick the right one (wireless?)

If you're on windows, open a command window and run "ipconfig". You'll get
a list of network adapters with their IP addresses.

If you're on Linux, use "ifconfig" instead.

None of the information that gives seems to be valid for what the squeezebox is asking for - ***.***.***.***.*** - . I can see a physical address for the wireless card, which is 00-09-F3-70-20-D5? But i can enter that. Im a bit lost here!

If on Windows, and you launch a command window (looks like old-style
DOS) you can type the command "ipconfig" (and press enter).

You should see something like this:

Ethernet adapter Wireless:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected

Ethernet adapter Office:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : mydomain.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.98.169
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 127.0.0.1

Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected

This is taken from my laptop. It shows 3 different "devices" that could
have an IP address. I've called my first one "wireless" although it
would normally be called "Local Area Network Connection" or something.

The IP address you are looking for is of the format xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
This means that it MAY BE 3 digits per block, but not necessarily. In
my case here, my office connection is currently connected. The IP
address is "10.10.98.169" (I've changed it a bit for security ;) but
that's the sort of IP address I'd be using for slimserver, for example.

So it doesn't HAVE TO be four blocks each of 3 digits. Each block can
have 1, 2, or 3 digits.

IP addresses and masks are always in the form 999.999.999.999 (four bytes,
decimal, 0-255). If you have 10.0.1.3, then it's the same as
010.000.001.003 - enter that latter form.

Where did you find that form ***.***.***.***.***?

MAC adressess are defined in six bytes, hexadecimal (0-9, a-f).

would the ip address change after a reboot? I did get it working (playing music). But after moving the SB3 to another room and rebooting the pc it cant connect to the slimserver again!

Depends on how your network is set up.

I guess you have a router which connects all your
PCs/laptops/squeezeboxes to the web. They're all linked via the
network, and it's likely that a router will control all this. A
commonplace way to set things up is to have each network device given an
IP address by the router. But normally the address won't actually
change all that much (if at all) - even if you reboot.

If the slimserver software still running on the server? Does it
automatically restart when you reboot the server?

If so, use "ipconfig" again on the server to see whether the IP address
has changed.

It could, yes, but normally should not.

BTW: doesn't the SB find the slimserver itself (eg. provide you with the
name of the server)?

Seem to have got it sorted. Not sure how, its obviously more than just an ip address issue.

Right. If you are prompted to enter an IP address, that means that
the player hasn't been able to find your server automatically.

Make sure that SlimServer is running on the computer and that you
have your firewall configured properly. That's usually the issue.
