View Full Version : SlimServer using 100% CPU every morning

The last several mornings I have woken up to an unresponsive SlimServer. It is set to perform a rescan every day at 5 am. When I go to my PC, I see it has my CPU spiked at 100% usage. I changed nothing immediately before this started. Last night I tried the latest 6.2.2 nightly to see if it would make a difference and I got the same thing this morning. There's nothing in the event logs to show what might be going on, except the entry showing when I manually kill the process. What can I do next to troubleshoot this?

I'm getting the problem only worse to the point that after many many re-install attempts changing the size of the music library - the system stalls after a short period during the scanning libary mode. All that can be done is a hard reboot. I wish I new what was going on.....

Is it still doing the re-scan when you look at the web interface? I had to disable the automatic rescan's because they made the whole systme unusable for over an hour when triggered for a largish database derived from iTunes.

Are you suing iTunes for ripping? Every time you play a track in iTunes it updates the iTunes database and can trigger a rescan. My problem arose becuase my daughter was playing tunes on iTunes and I was trying to use the SB - it crippled SlimServer.

Are you using AlienBBC? I see the same if one of the SBs is streaming - 100% cpu and database scan never finishes. (running Linux and 6.22 by the way).

Andy.

I can't access the web interface because it is unresponsive. And, no, I am not using iTunes for anything. Don't even have it installed.

Are you using AlienBBC?
No, I am not using AlienBBC or any features that access or stream from the Internet.

The only plugins I have active are:
Alarm Plugin A
Auto Dim Display
Date and Time
Favorites
MusicMagic
Random Mix
Rescan Music Library
Save Playlist
Server & Network Health

Does the same lock up occur if you start a rescan manually [from the web page]

If so, could you start the server from a command window with --d_info to see what the server is doing when it goes to 100% cpu load. Post what it says when it locks up.

Assuming you are on windows:
1) stop the server
2) open a cmd window [start -> run, type "cmd" return]
3) type "cd \Program Files\SlimSever\server"
4) type "slim --d_info"
5) open the web page and start a scan
6) watch all the debug fly past and see if it repeats - post the ouput after leaving for a while

[control C to stop the server in this window]

I suspect there is something in your library which makes the scan go round in circles for ever. It could be just one problem file or directory link.

[I'd be really supprised if AlienBBC impacted this...]

It seems to be getting stuck on the first folder, whatever that happens to be. The first time I did it, it got stuck here:

I have been beta testing the next version of MusicMagic Mixer, which includes a headless server mode. I decided to try stopping the MusicMagic Service and restarting the SlimServer rescan, and things seem to be moving along now (but it is still scanning). So, I suspect the problem is with MusicMagic and not SlimServer.

Unfortunately, my Internet access went dead yesterday and it won't be fixed until Friday, so there isn't a whole lot I can do to pursue this in the meantime while I'm in hell… er, I mean… limited hours dialup.

That sounds viable. I would have expected it to be reading files in a loop or something if the slimserver scanning process caused the lock up itself. In this case you would probably see continual debug output with file names repeating in some way.
