Since upgrading from SS6.0.1 and SB2fw11 to SS6.2.1 and SB23fw28m, I see 'Smart Gain' enabled. What exactly is this as I don't see it documented anywhere.

This has to do with how slimserver handles replay gain. Smart gain
will attempt to autoamtically determine if you are playing an album or
a playlist of individual tracks. Thus, it chooses the album gain or
the track gain. For info about replay gain, check google.
