Whats up with UK prices? I know some things are a bit cheaper in the states, especially US made products, but the differnce is massive with the SB3.

The cheapest (wireless) i can find in the UK is 225, and thats from a good suplier (Scan) who are normally very reasonable. But the RRP price in the states (on the Slim Devices website) is 175.

Whats the deal with this? That a huge increase. Can anyone offical at Slim Devices explain this, or are we being shafted here in the UK?

I will end up buying one anyway though. They are just so damn good (Not that i can find one anywhere in stock anyway).

Well, for one thing the UK price includes VAT @ 17.5%, which the US price does not. So it's more like 205 vs 225. The other 20 quid is, I assume, the cost of the UK distributor shipping it over and selling it. You'd pay at least than much to ship it over yourself, so to be honest it doesn't seem like much of a problem.

OK, thanks for that. I thought the price on the Slimdevices front page included your version of VAT. Thanks anyway, i feel better knowing that (i think!).

Now i just need to find one in stock :)

you can search the forum for previous discussions on this topic.
Plenty of UK vendors have weighed in on this already.

You may want to place your order anyway. If you wait, and others get
in before you, then you run the risk of that stock disappearing into
the hands of existing orders before the retailer gets around to
changing the website. Going by all the reports, they have been going
fast.

Sales Tax (US version of VAT) is a little weird (well, from the POV of a brit like myself anyway!). Firstly, it varies from state to state (around 6% here in NJ, but the other side of the river in NY it's over 8%).

Secondly, it's never quoted in advertised prices - so the price you see on the tag is rarely the price you pay. This applies to retail stores as well as online purchases, and is seriously annoying - "I'll buy this item for $0.99, as I have a dollar in my pocket - whoops - it's actually $1.07!".

Thirdly, you often don't pay sales tax at all for online purchases. The idea is that interstate commerce isn't taxed, so if I live in NJ and buy from CA, there's no tax. However, if the company in question have an office in NJ (however tiny), then it's not considered interstate. And some states have recently changed their laws to allow them to try and recover the "lost" income from this kind of thing.

So all in all, 5 different people in the US buying the same product can end up paying 5 different prices.

Here we go again....

US price = USD
Add 30USD shipping.
Then divide by an exchange rate. Let's call it 1GBP:1.7USD.
Add VAT @ 17.5%.
Add the VAT collection fee charged by the courier. It's about a tenner.
Bingo. Same price.

No one in the UK is being shafted. It's deliberately priced at parity with
landed cost with the US. Commercial reality of:

- import/export
- freight
- VAT

The United States doesn't really have a VAT. There are local and state taxes, but they are only charged when the delivery address is in the US. Your incoming customs will charge the VAT, or perhaps the delivery company. I believe the Slim order page makes that clear.

I ordered 2 SB3's to be delivered to my company's US offices for
collection when I visited there last month, and paid pretty much the
advertised price - 500USD plus shipping, after the 100USD discount.
This was for delivery to MA, so no tax was levied on the purchase. This
equated to 300GBP, and a cheery whistle as I walked through the green
channel at London Heathrow. No way I could get anywhere near that price
locally here in the UK.
