Hi

Just wanted to say - excellent piece of work. I run my system on a readyNAS system, which gives an excellent responsive experience from the squeezebox but lacks a little speed when using the web browser end of things. With Moose I have super speedy control on both the PC and direct to the NAS, which is just great.

I reckon you should make the core controls (play stop etc a bit bigger, and embeddable on to the Taskbar one day would be awesome!)

I'm sure you have billions of ideas and plans and don't need anymore, but just wanted to thank you for a very nice piece of work.

Hi Bossa.. Not sure what you mean.. Seprate play/next icons in the system
tray ?

Actually I was thinking of a minimise-to-tray option. It would then be quite

easy to add these controls to the tray menu. I was also thinking about a
scrolling marquee kind of thing for the task-bar icon - bit like winamp
does.
Hmmm.. Could even have an option to change the icon to be the currently
playing album.. Might get a bit confusing though..

Cool, glad you like it.. Ideas always welcome.. With any luck, slim might
even promote it from being a plugin on the wiki.. ;-)

BTW, just wondering.. Would anyone be interested in a WinCE pocketpc
port ?

Definitely - Just got an 'epods' appliance with wince (2.12) and that
would be fantastic. Right now I'm using the handheld version on the
browser. Not a bad little appliance for $112.00
I'm a 'Mac' person so I am unable to use Moose but the screen shots
look great and from what I hear it's very snappy.

Some comments so far:

1) The length info shown is more or less faulty.
Most tracks are shown as "00:00", a few have very high numbers like 418:08 (though the web interface shows the correct time of about 4 minutes).
For the tracks shown as "00:00", when playing, a length of "-214783648:51" is shown.
Are there maybe problems with embedded lyrics and artwork?

2) Though I have a thumb.jpg and cover.jpg in each album folder as well as cover.jpg embedded in each ID3 tag, Moose shows no cover art in the library view. In the "now playing" view however, the current album cover is shown.

3) I'd prefer a layout similiar to e.g. Fishbone theme:
A browse artist/album/artwork view ont the left side, the playlist on the right side and the track info/play controls above or below the playlist.

Yes!

One thing would be important - need to be able to select "which" Squeezebox is being controlled right now, easily (ie not buried in dialogues).

Would you need to have your own database on the pocketPC (might not have much room...)?

Ooh, not seen this.. Which server build are you on ? Are these mp3 files ?

I've not really tried embedded lyrics, but embedded artwork should work
the same as with slimserver..

Hmm.. They use the same bit of code, so this is weird.. Have you altered the
defaults for the thumbnail settings at all ? May well be a server version
thing..

Ok, have been playing some more with Moose. Here follows a long list of thoughts and suggestions, which you are free to take on board or not as you see fit, I am very impressed with the work so far in any case, these are just a few things that might improve the experience a bit.

I am browsing by files, not sql at this stage, as I can't get access to the SQL file on the readyNAS side of things (have requested over there that they offer that and they seem to be amenable to the idea).

First found a bug - I can't add a José González album via the moose interface but can via the slim web interface & squeezebox. However once I do so, it then appears fine on the Moose interface. I suspect this is a funny chars in file names issue, let me know what I can do to help you solve it.

I definitely think a tray interface would be great - pause, volume, skip would be essentials I think, plus a mouse over current track or a fading pop up thingy when the track changes.

A display somewhere of the current replaygain value would be great too, help diagnose those tracks missing info issues that crop up occasionally.

I really miss the New Music display from slimserver.

I do think a combined library/now playing list single screen approach might work, or at least separate task bar entries for each window would really aid swapping between them.

Right click functionalities would be great where appropriate.

The control icons in the bottom right of Now Playing could be bigger.

I don't get the thumbs in the album list either but then I generally only have cover.jpg in there, not thumbs. Maybe somethign that scales the cover.jpg if thumb.jpg is missing would be good?

Some streamlining in the way the playlist is sent back to the server to reduce a bit of lag and flicker might not go astray if possible.

Again, thanks for your work and these are just ideas/suggestions!

Hmm.. I'll give this a go.. What's the exact folder structure of the album ?

Indeed - good idea.. Is there access to this via the CLI ?

I really miss the New Music display from slimserver.

Sorting the library by date is pretty much the same.. Just uses the modified
timestamps on the folders..

I do think a combined library/now playing list single screen approach
> might work, or at least separate task bar entries for each window would

Ahh, I turned off the library task-bar-icon as I thought it was a bit
confusing
having 2 icons.. I'll put it back - might make more sense now they look more
similar..

Yes.. I think this is a 6.5 issue.. A workaround (although I'll probably get
this
fixed today) would be to copy your thumbnails locally.. If you create a
folder
structure of artist/album in the thumbnail directory, and copy in your
cover.jpg
or folder.jpg files, it'll pick those up as cached..

> Some streamlining in the way the playlist is sent back to the server to
> reduce a bit of lag and flicker might not go astray if possible.

Yes, I need to reduce the traffic a bit.. If reading the SQL, most of the
requested info is already present, so in theory all I need are the IDs... Of
course with folder reading it'll still need the info.. Hmmm..

Ok - new music sorting by date - was not working for me because I just moved the whoel collection from a local server to the NAS hence the change in tiem stamps. That will work fine in future though I am sure.

I am not using 6.5, 6.2.1 is what they are up to over in readyNAS land.

My folder structure is:
M:\Music\José González\2005 - Veneer\Tracks.mp3 (...)
M:\Music\José González\2005 - Veneer\cover.jpg

I haven't used the CLI myself so I am not sure about the ReplayGain info being available, would be very handy though!

Thanks again, I'm really enjoying using Moose,

Ok..

I've had a go with 'José González' in the path and it seems to work..
But, when using the folders scanning option, Moose passes slimserver URLs
instead of IDs..
I have had problems with slimserver and URLs in the past..
BTW, when Moose uses the DB scanning option, it uses ID's instead of URLs.
IDs do seem to be a much more reliable way of selecting stuff.

Now, Moose gets passed these IDs from the server when it's currently playing
tracks, so I've just added some code
which attempts to temporarily remember the IDs of the currently playing
album, and artist.
To make these IDs be remembered permanently, you can use the
Library->File->Save library menu option.

So, if José's or anyone else's albums are still causing problems:
* Download the new build I've just put up (0.17)
* Fire up Moose and open the options window
* Make sure the SQLite file control is empty, then do a folder rescan
* Get the problem album playing via the remote or web-interface
* Check that the now playing details come up ok in Moose
* Open the library window
* Select File->Save Library

Then hopefully the next time you select the album, it should work.

If not, turn on the logging option and send me the details off-list.
It's a bit strange that it doesnt work normally.. Hmmm..

Note that folder rescanning will wipe any previously added IDs, so it's not
really an ideal solution.

Oh, and also with 0.17 I've added some code to read album artwork
directly from the library folders.. It's a bit limited - you must have
folder.jpg, cover.jpg or thumb.jpg files amongst the mp3s..

Ah, yes, 6.5 was a bit of a red herring - seems to work fine with either
6.2.2 or 6.5 on my setup.

What format are the files giving the strange durations ? Are you using cue
files or playlists ?

If you turn on logging, and mail me a log file (off-list) when you're
getting the
dodgy times and no thumbnails, I'll see if I can suss what's happening.
There was a problem a while back, but that should all be fixed..

WinCE would be the first stop as it's a pretty similar platform, and
supports the dotNet runtimes.. (also my PDA runs it).

Other than data-structures, I think a Palm port would be a complete
re-write.. Dont really know enough about the platform though..

Anyhow, more work to do on the windows version first..

Dr., is there anyplace that explains exactly what this program is and what it does? It is a replacement for Softsqueeze or just a program that you use instead of Softsqueeze for the manipulation of music files only? How does it do a rescan faster than Softsqueeze, and is a Softsqueeze rescan still necessary? Do all other functions still have to be done on the Softsqueeze program? What other advantages are there to this program?

Hi Kyle,

Firstly, by Softsqueeze, I presume you mean the SlimServer itself ?
Softsqueeze is a Squeezebox emulator, although you can use it
to alter Slimserver settings..

Moose doesnt play music itself, it just controls what your
Squeezebox (or Softsqueeze) plays. Its functionality and aims are very
similar to those that the web-based front-end provides. In theory
Moose puts less burden on the server machine, and hopefully is
much more snappy since it's a native windows application.

There are two scanning modes. The first mode scans files and folders.
When using this mode, no tags are read from the files, so it's super-fast.
This is the mode which saves you doing slimserver rescans, but you must
have your music organised in artist/album/tracks type folder structure.

The second scanning mode scans slimserver's database. This is a bit more
fiddly, but is much more versatile as it's tag-based. Again, this rescan is
quite fast as it's using the information which slimserver has already
gathered from the files.

The moose website explains things in a bit more detail, but it's more of a
manual than an explanation:
http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove

Hope that helps..

Hope this helps...
Strange that JPG files (cover.jpg/song.jpg) are printed out as "song"...

And a little update: I just copied the database to a folder visible for windows and rescanned the database. Now I can see thumbnails in the library view. So this seems to be a "folder scan" problem. Then again, track lengths are still wrong.

Totally irrelevant but:-

Just tried Moose for the first time. Pretty good start - I like it, but I've found some problems (I think):

1. Main Window - if I click on the album artwork, it disapears for a couple of seconds then gets redisplayed.

2. With a player configured with a blank MAC address, click on any label (eg. "Artist"), and a lot of the text is made invisible. Click again to redisplay it. I think this is equivalent to clicking on the "Viewing:" button. In fact, this seems to happen if clicking on most blank form space.

3. Library - I'm not seeing the artwork thumbnails, just yellow circles instead.

4. Don't know what I did, but after bit of use, the playlist wasn't displaying any tracks, and I couldn't add any from the library.

5. I can't get the tagger app (Mp3Tag) to work. Perhaps the current working folder needs to be set to the Mp3Tag install dir when launching?

6. My library has the same artist name folders in various locations, so I end up with multiple instances of the same artist names in the library list. Clicking on them produces the same complete list of albums. Will try loading from the sql library, instead of scanning folders.

7. Would be nice to be able to drag slider bars - eg. to change volume or track position (eg. visual update when dragging such as display volume/track time as hover text, commit when mouse button is released).

8. Is the Play button (bottom left) required, as there is a ">" play button bottom-right? Nb. the bottom-right button could toggle between ">" and "||" when play/pause.

9. Would be nice if it could be minimised to task tray.

10. "Open Folder" doesn't do anything.

This went away when I scanned from sql library - I'm now seeing thumbnails in the library.

>1. Main Window - if I click on the album artwork, it disapears for a couple of seconds then gets redisplayed.

1. Same for me but this really isn't an issue for me as it is more like a fraction of a second and why would you click on the artwork anyway?

>4. Don't know what I did, but after bit of use, the playlist wasn't displaying any tracks, and I couldn't add any from the library.

4. I found that after putting a large custom playlist I accidently pressed some keys in the search box (I think that is what it is for, Top left hand of the Library screen, it seems to do a search), I think as soon as you press return it deletes the playlist and comes up with something completely random. It has just replaced Aimee Mann with Aqua - very distressing.

>7. Would be nice to be able to drag slider bars - eg. to change volume or track position (eg. visual update when dragging such as display volume/track time as hover text, commit when mouse button is released).

7. I agree this would be nice but not really a must have.

>8. Is the Play button (bottom left) required, as there is a ">" play button bottom-right? Nb. the bottom-right button could toggle between ">" and "||" when play/pause.

8. As far as I can tell this just shows the state of the player i.e. Play / Stop / Pause, I can't get it to do anything.

>10. "Open Folder" doesn't do anything.

10. Works fine for me.

Other things that I have noted

- Current playing song on the library screen really screws up for large file names, does it really need to be there?

- I am having issues using Moose over a remote desktop in that it constantly refreshes and flickers. It is fine on the host computer but not when I access it remotely. Not a huge issue I just don't understand why.

- Would it be possible to select multiple tracks in the tracklist and delete/move them on mass. This would be very useful.

- The losing playlist thing is very annoying for me and one of the main limitations. I do not want to spend a signifcant length of time compiling and tweaking a playlist to lose it by accidently not pressing CTRL to add a file (and hence playing it and wiping the playlist). I think it would be great to either have an option so that clicking adds and CTRL plays and deletes or have a way of recovering your playlist (like media player). I know I could save at regular intervals but who really wants to do that.

- Are there any plans to have internet radio linked for anywhere, I could really do with accessing LastFM from somewhere on Moose.

Moose just gets better and better, great work.

Aye, this is actually an intended feature.. It re-requests the current
artwork.. In the early days Moose would be told that a new song was playing,
so it requested artwork, but the server would randomly return the previous
songs artwork.. So, clicking the artwork fixed the problem.. Doesnt really
make sense anymore - clicking the artwork should probably either cycle the
jpgs in the album folder, or maybe jump to some info on the album or
something..

2. With a player configured with a blank MAC address, click on any label

Clicking the viewing button, or on the background of the now playing window
switches the display between tags and paths. Clicking the larger track,
artist or album text switches between 'tidy-text' and 'normal'.. Tidy-text
strips spaces, removes leading 'The's and capitalises the first letter of
the larger text. When I sort right-click menus out, this'll all be more
intuitive hopefully.

3. Library - I'm not seeing the artwork thumbnails, just yellow circles
> instead.

The are problems with these thumbnails if you use the 'rescan folders' way
of populating the moo file. 0.17 added a fix if your files are set up with
the following folder structure: <artist>/<album>/<tracks> (and accessible
via the audioroot path) (and have the file folder.jpg, cover.jpg or
thumb.jpg)

4. Don't know what I did, but after bit of use, the playlist wasn't
> displaying any tracks, and I couldn't add any from the library.

This doesnt sound good.. If you see it again, and can repeat it, let me
know..

5. I can't get the tagger app (Mp3Tag) to work. Perhaps the current working
> folder needs to be set to the Mp3Tag install dir when launching?

With folder scanning, the tagger, open folder and album thumbnail options
all require your music to be accessible via the audio root path. Also, they
must be organised <artist>/<album>/<tracks>.
With SQLite scanning, the tagger and open folder features dont currently
work, but the album artwork should be less of a pain.

7. Would be nice to be able to drag slider bars - eg. to change volume or
> track position (eg. visual update when dragging such as display volume/track

Yes, good idea..

8. Is the Play button (bottom left) required, as there is a ">" play button
> bottom-right? Nb. the bottom-right button could toggle between ">" and "||"
> when play/pause.

The bottom left button shows the status of the player. I need to add
graphics to those buttons to neaten things up a bit. Changing the play
button to pause is now on the list.. :-)

9. Would be nice if it could be minimised to task tray.

Coming soon..

10. "Open Folder" doesn't do anything.

See 5. above..

Yes, I should probably remove that enter key option now we're dealing
with playlists a bit better.. When you press enter it does the same as
clicking the play button at the to right - ie, clears the playlist and
plays the 'most sensible' item, which is often not the most sensible
in reality..

> 8. As far as I can tell this just shows the state of the player i.e.

It should toggle between play and paused when clicked, but with the
bitmap buttons, it makes little sense anymore really.. Actually, when
it says 'player off', if you click the left of the control - where the
'play' button would be - it'll turn on the player..

> - Current playing song on the library screen really screws up for large

Yes, why did I enlarge this font.. Oops.. But, no, it doesnt really
need to be there, although it can provide useful information about
socket problems there..

Ah, probably the background cycling. I need to add options to turn this off...

Yup, on the list.. I need to implement some kind of CLI message queue
first.. This'll be good for other stuff too though..

Yes.. I'll make the enter key 'insert' rather than 'play'.. Hmm..
Actually, might make more sense having an option - play, append,
insert, do nothing.. Yeah, I'll do that I think..

> - Are there any plans to have internet radio linked for anywhere, I

Yes, it would make sense.. Maybe radio stations should appear in the
load playlist window, at least initially..

Mr Beef.. Thanks for the log.. I can't repeat the functionality you
describe, so I've put some extra logging in to the time/duration
display code. If you get a moment, could you give the new build
(just put 0.18 up) a try. Currently I'm thinking it's a dotNet runtime
bug, but we'll see..

Also new in 0.18... (http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove)

New option - Background - which controls the background of the
now playing window. For Virtual PC / VNC, it's probably best to set
this to Flat or Graduated, as those two modes dont rotate on idles.
Beware of the crazy and insane modes.. Just a bit of fun.. ;-)

New option - Enter Key - which controls what the enter key does in
the library window. I've defaulted this to inactive, so if you hit enter by
mistake after typing a search in, it doesnt wipe the playlist and play
the results.

Enjoy,

Ah, 0xdeadbeef, think I've fixed it.. Check out 0.20 which I've
just put up..

I reckon it's a locale thing and that dotNet is seeing
266.300833333333 as 266300833333333 as it thinks
the period's a 'NumberGroupSeparator' rather than a
'CurrencyDecimalSeparator'.. So.. I've set the CLI
decoding thread to use the English UK locale now,
which seems to fix the problem..

Also new in 0.20 is support for the 'open folder' and
'open tagger' buttons when populating via DB scanning
rather than folder scanning.. It wont work for collections
with lnk files yet, but I'll sort that soon enough..

My first go at this, apologies if these comments are repeats.. using 0.20 with database scanning on WinXP.

(1) looks very nice!

(2) seems to require a bit of CPU grunt to keep going... my poor 600MHz box running Slimserver, Softsqueeze and Moose kept stalling playback (works ok just using Softsqueeze).

(3) Would like to be able to control more than one SB

(4) Any chance of not having to type in the MAC addresses?

(5) I tried the "Tagger" button (using Mp3tag): it fails if there is a space in the artist or album name (both folders in my structure): Mp3tag starts but then reports "file not found" (well, in German actually but I think I got the gist of it). I then looked hard for an artist and album without any spaces (there aren't many) and this time MP3tag opened fine. Unfortunately it ignored the folder and just opened the last directory it was used in!! So this bit is probably a limitation of mp3tag...

(6) Any chance of having "browse" dialogs for the various file/folder selections?

(7) As commented previously - a PocketPC version would be very nice, but only if it doesn't need so much horsepower as to be unusable.

Many thanks for this...

Best regards
Ceejay

Running Moose.exe from a mapped server share displays the following error:

Just-In-Time Debugging

An exception 'System.Security.SecurityException' has occured in Moose.exe. [...]

My guess is that it is not using the currently logged on users credentials? I have it working fine from a local drive. I've tried both mapped and UNC shares.

Anyhow, great peice of work! If its a java app is there any way to port it over to a Palm Treo? I recently installed a java tool on mine.

You could use the method referred to in the last message of this thread:

Or use this component (if you belong to CodeProject - if not, let me

Sweet! The way things are going with Moose... I may never need to control playback via the Slimsever web-interface again. Good riddance.

Many of us hope using Nokia 770 as a remote could bring user friendly UI experience to SB3. Using "skins" is adequate at best as it still limits us to webbased interface.

I would love to see Moose getting ported to support Nokia 770 as linux front end. Or at least Moose like front end for linux platform like Nokia 770.

I can only dream, right?

No, you could pick up programming instead and do this for all of us ;-).

While I'd love to see a Linux client I don't think Moose will ever be
ported to anything like the 770. As it's programmed in .net (afaik)
there's little chance for this to happen.

Just to let you know, this isn't as simple as it sounds :) The codes given on the page you linked to are Media Player's default keyboard shortcuts, these are NOT the standard media keycodes generated by your keyboard's control buttons. I'm currently working on my own windows based slimserver controller WinSlim (think "moose-lite") and I have the media buttons working nicely for play, pause, stop, next, prev and volume. The only issue right now is Logitech's SetPoint software which screws everything up. If I quit SetPoint it works fine, if it's running it doesn't work. I'm still working on sorting that out.

WinSlim should be available for download in a day or two.

It never is, is it? :) I had assumed that the hardcoded keyboard media keys simply sent out "combined" keystrokes (e.g. CTRL+P)

Have you looked into modifying the player.ini file that comes with SetPoint so your app becomes a recognised media player for SetPoint?

Alternatively maybe something could be done with uberOptions which allows a lot more configuration in SetPoint.
