I downloaded and installed slimserver on my laptop and all I see resulting from installing that software is an icon in my task tray. No interface (web or otherwise) seems to exist for it and therefore I have no idea what this software does or can do.

What have I done wrong? Can anyone straighten me out?

Load up a browser window and type http://localhost:9000

If that doesn't load up the web interface then I would suggest re-installing the software.

Double clicking on the system tray icon 'should' also load up the web interface.

To access the web interface open your internet explorer and type:
http://127.0.0.1:9000/

To listen to music (after pointing slimserver to your music directory)
you will need to:

1) buy a squeezebox
2) or run a squeezebox 'emulator' - click on the softsqueeze button in
the web interface (near the bottom on the left hand side)

Click on that icon, then choose "Open SlimServer"

This will open up the SlimServer window in your web browser, from
there you can browse your music library, read the help, etc...

Thanks for all the quick help. Unfortunately, there is still nothing. Neither of the two IP addresses worked: "Connection refused when trying to connect ...." And on the "click on the icon and select "Open Slimserver" suggestion, there is no option present for "Open Slimserver". It says "Starting Slimserver". I assume that is the option that you meant. However, it is grayed out, so I can't select that either.

Is there a history of re-installs being frequently necessary? I haven't, in my recollection, ever needed to re-install software.

Thanks again.

FWIW, I don't have a squeezebox yet, but it's coming.

Sounds as if the server software is having trouble starting. I dont have
any recent experience with the windows version though so cant help you
much more apart from try disabling your firewall/internet security and
then trying to start slimserver.

Otherwise try contacting the support team - but I am not sure how willin
g they will be to help you if you dont have a squeezebox (if your give
them an order number though....)

If you are on Windows XP go to:

Start - Settings - Control Panel

Click on Administrative Tools and then Services

Scroll down to Slimserver and see if it has started, if it has, restart it, if not start the service.

If either of these fix it, post here and I'll fish out the instructions for re-installing the service

Well, I figured an uninstall/install cycle couldn't hurt so I tried it. In doing so, I noticed that the version number of the first download was different from today's version number. (We're talking two downloads, 3 days apart.) So, I figured there was a good chance that redownloading and installing would be different and probably it would work.

And it did. Now I just have to wait and get the hardware - which will be a modded SB3 from Vinnie at RedWineAudio.

Thanks for all the help!!

Excellent, glad it worked and at least you got it sorted before the SB3 arrives so you don't have to wait to play with it!!

Sounds like you're downloading the nightlys? They're development versions and not really intended for end users. It's perfectly possible that the one you got originally was broken. The official version is 6.2.1 - available at http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html.

You may have firewall software that is blocking access.

I see that when I start Softsqueeze.
