How long does it take for New Music to show up in
New Music?

I've been using SlimServer for a month now and New
Music still lists each and every song in my
collection, even though I have added 25-50 songs.

I have upgraded SlimServer and rebuilt my library
from scratch several times (Rescan - "Clear
library and rescan everything") in the interim
though. Would that be the cause?

The way New Music works, if I understand correcly, is that it looks at the files' last modified date/time sorts into descending order. If you're adding new music that actually has old timestamps on the files, then they will be listed according to the timestamp, not when you've added the files to the library.

I tend to tag music immediately before adding it to my library. This alters the last modified date and therefore causes the music to show up in New Music in pretty much the order that I've added the files to the server. If I retag some old files, though, they also get floated to the top of the New Music.

If you don't want to mess with the tags in order to alter the files' timestamps, look for a software utility commonly called "touch" that gives you the ability to just change the file date/time.

Ah yes I see! It sorts my music by newest first.

Yes, in that case it works fine! I was expecting
to see the newest ones only.

Thanks Jim.

There's also a setting in the server prefs at Server Settings > Behavior for "New Music Limit" that sets a limit on how many items appear in New Music. I actually have mine set to something like 10,000 so that I can also see the oldest items in my library by going to the last page in the web interface. I think that's the only way to get a chronological listing by file date.
