Have you tried downloading a copy of Net::Pop3 and putting it into the Plugins
folder as Plugins/Net/POP3.pm? That should at least get it loading properly.

Has anyone ever heard of an E-Mail checker plugin for slimserver that would work on the windows platform? I cannot get to work the plugin provided by KDF [http://callisto.deane-freeman.com/slimserver/ and http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=10574] in my environment, which consists of the SB2 plus slimserver running on an WinXP machine.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I did so, once with the Email.pm and once without it. The plugin still doesn't show up, neither in the plugins section on the web interface, nor on the equivalent menu item on the SB2 itself (how would it be called there, by the way?)

Config is: Win XP Pro, Slimserver for Windows V 6.2.2

If the plugin doesn't even show up, my guess would be that somehow
(it's actually quite easy to do by mistake) the line endings are
Windows endings (Carriage Return + Line Feed) and should be Unix ones
(Line Feed only). I'm not a Windows user, so I can't say what text
editor can cure this, but it should be easy.

Very useful little shell script that can be used to convert files from windows
to unix line breaks (just save it as fixCrs.sh and give it execute
permission):-

-------------------------------------------
#/!bin/sh
# convert a given file into a unix CR format
# and save it back under its original name
# usage: fixCrs <file> <file> <file>
for arg
do
tr '\015' '\012' < $arg > $arg.fixCrs
mv $arg.fixCrs $arg
done
-------------------------------------------

Tried to convert the files POP3.pm and Email.pm to Unix Linebreaks, but the result is still the same: No E-Mail Plugin showing up, neither in the plugins section on the web interface, nor on the equivalent menu item on the SB2 itself.

To avoid any possible misunderstanding: I stored the two above mentioned files in the folder C:\Programme\SlimServer\server\Plugins\Net and restarted the slimserver application. Then anything called "E-Mail" or "Pop3" should have appeared on both, the web interface and the squeezebox plugins menu, right?

C:\Programme\SlimServer\server\Plugins\Email.pm
C:\Programme\SlimServer\server\Plugins\Net\POP3.pm

1) stop the server.
2) open a command line window:
START->Programmes->Accessories->Command Prompt
3) start slimserver:
C:\Programme\SlimServer\server\slim.exe --d_plugins
4) Watch for any mention of Email.pm or POP email checker

Thanks -- I feel we're getting closer to the problem. If I understand the log file right, some "Cmd.pm" seems to be missing and preventing Email.pm from running on the computer. Here's the full text:

That looks about right. Try this link for Net::Cmd:

http://search.cpan.org/src/GBARR/libnet-1.19/Net/Cmd.pm

download and place in Plugins/Net alongside POP3.pm

That was the "missing link" indeed - thank you very much. Guess that other users might appreciate it if you mentioned this file on your plugins page, as well.

Another problem though: After editing the Email.pm file (adding pop server address, user and pw) and asking the Squeezebox to check for mail via the "plugins > POP3 email browser" entry, the SB shows "Please Wait" for about a minute and then the slimserver application shuts down without any further error message.

Any idea?

Cheers, M.

Well, the command
C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server>slim.exe --d_plugins

does not show any particular error.

The Windows event viewer says:
"Undefined subroutine &Slim::Music::Info::durationSeconds called at C:/Program Files/SlimServer/server/Plugins/Email.pm line 201."

right, this is a result of the audible alert. I've posted a new
version which works on my setup using 6.5. Hopefully it also works on
6.2.2 builds.
This version is now a zip file with the required modules included.
just unzip to Plugins folder with pathnames intact.

Good point. When turning audible alert off, it works fine.

Looks good -- and I appreciate very much that server, user and pass can now get typed in in the web browser and no longer in the source file :-)

-- but still this error appears when turning on the audible alarm:

"Can't call method "durationSeconds" on an undefined value at C:/Programme/SlimServer/server/Plugins/Email.pm line 255."

I am running SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 5317 - Windows XP - DE - cp1252.

I'll try with V 6.5 and let you know.

Seems to work well with SlimServer Version: 6.5b1 - 5389 - Windows XP - DE - cp1252

Thanks for all your help.

By the way: How do you assign the plugin as a screensaver? The pulldown menus only offer the default functionalities, no 3rd party plugins.

The email plugin is not designed to be a screensaver. I've long since
change my emails to IMAP so I don't use the plugin any more. As such,
I'm unlikely to get into a rewrite of this type. I don't allocate my
time to plugins like I used to. Were anyone to create a patch, I'd be
happy to merge and re-post at any time.

Sorry, but: Yes, I have it there. Must be something different. But as I upgraded Slimserver to the current beta release, I won't be able to reproduce the error anyway ;-)

The plugin works perfectly as it is. A screensaver mode displaying the latest E-Mails like an RSS feed in idle times would only have been the cherry on the cake (hope that's understandable. The French say: "la cerise sur le gâteau").

Is this plugin function workable with gmail? I've tried the plain vanilla pop3 address of pop.gmail.com and also specifying the port by doing pop.gmail.com:995, but neither work.

Adding the port crashes slimserver, so I don't think that's good, and without the port, it says it can't connect and 'press rec to retry) which seems to mean press ADD to retry.

Is this plugin going to do what I'm asking of it, or should I investigate another way round it, as I understand the plugin is not being developed anymore.

Thanks
Stephen.

AFAIK POP3 email checkers (like this one) won't work with gmail because gmail requires an ssl (secure) connection before it will download mail.

See this thread though for an interesting work around using RSS feeds:

gmail is a funny one. it may not be within the abailities Net::POP3
module used by the plugin.

I took: "As such, I'm unlikely to get into a rewrite of this type. I don't allocate my time to plugins like I used to." to mean that it's not likely to be developed further...

My workaround today is to forward all my gmail to a pop3 account that I wasn't using, and that works fine. Though duplicating email is going to be a pain to manage

The only bit of info I can add to this gmail problem, is the gmail notifier uses port 80 according to my firewall logging software, whilst Thunderbird checking gmail checks on port 995. Oddly they go to different IP addresses. The firewall log doesn't tell me if any secure connections are being setup. The IP addresses are for Thunderbird; 72.14.205.99 whilst the gmail notifier checks 72.14.205.9

I could try putting this alternate IP address into the pop3 checker, but I'd assume that the IP address may change?

mmm.

Stephen.

edit, that didn't work either. Alternate IP address and the pop3 checker checks port 110 as it should, put :80 at the end and it does check port 80, but gets nothing back. Put :995 at the end and whilst it doesn't crash it stops responding. A restart of the process is needed to get it back.

The gmail notifier uses both 80 and 443. 443 is used for the secure portion (ie. username/password). It does not speak the POP protocol, so as you've discovered, you are not going to be able to get it to work that way. Port 995 is the SSL version of POP - the SSL conversation is not one you can just use as you see fit. There appropriate dialog must occur between the SSL client and server.

Gmail requires SSL - plain and simple.

That was in response to a major rewrite. That is a far cry from
fixing things that crash the server. I'd certainly welcome patches,
of course.

I'm fairly certain that the POP3 module assumes the standard POP3
port. Ill have to check. It could be as simple as actually allowing
the port to be specified. A simple change, I'll do.

I would tend to think it would.

Right,
I've given Mail::Pop3Client a trial for use with the Email plugin, and
accessing gmail accounts. The good news is that the SSL features work
like a charm. The bad news is that gmail deletes the emails from the
pop3 side of their server as soon as they are accessed. There is a
setting to keep the emails available on gmail, but this does not seem
to be the same as leaving them available for pop3.

obviously, the solution remains a mystery.

Gmail only allows you to download messages once via POP:

My workaround for the once only POP download 'feature' is to download headers when I check my GMAIL via my mobile. Can this other program be configured to check headers?

In reality I only use the email plugin to read the subjects of any new emails, not the bodies. Often I get html mail (urrgh) anyway and that doesn't come through very well.

Thanks

Stephen.

The plugin first checks for headers, to show subject and sender.
Pressing right would then download the selected message for reading.
I never got to the message body part, before the mails were gone.

Sorry. End of the road on gmail. I have no desire to start hacking a
CPAN module to try and get around something that a provider has
deliberately done to restrict their service.

Based on KDF's work, I've created an E-mail screensaver that displays the number of e-mails in each of inboxes of the listed e-mail accounts, primarily for use when the Squeezebox is off. It uses the same algorithms as the Email.pm plug-in to determine when an item has appeared in the inbox.

It uses a separate list to the e-mail checker and is designed to work independently of it.

To avoid burn-in, the display has two lines, one showing the date and one showing the inbox statuses. It swaps them periodically.

Anybody interested in trialing this?
