View Full Version : Buying SB3 in the UK

Seems pretty hard to get hold of a SB3 in the UK at the moment. I have one on order from dabs.com but their web site has said "Stock expected soon" for almost 2 weeks.

Would I be better off to cancel this order and buy direct from the Slim Devices website? I know I would get stung for VAT (or anti-fair trade tax as I like to call it ;( ), but it should still work out as slightly cheaper than the 235 that dabs.com want for it.

1) What is the delay like when ordering direct from Slim devices?

2) Why do we always get so ripped off in Britain?

Andy.

I got mine a week ago on the 14th. It was ordered on the 28th October (before they started shipping on Nov 1). I ordered one with a friend, so we benefited from the $100 discount for two, also. And I was lucky enough not to get stung for VAT and the "handling fee" of the courier.

Total cost for a wireless version was 154 after the bank took its cut.

Or you could see if any of the other UK suppliers have the version you want in stock. A quick google should give you some options. EG multitask, advancedmp3players, ...

My own experience with Dabs is that they are great if they have what you want in stock, not necessarily so otherwise.

Andy,

Dabs.com now have white wired and wireless in stock and I am sure other retailers will be showing white stock as well now.

We received a small amount of black wireless SB3 today and they were shared out evenly between everybody who had back orders with us. Not all back orders were cleared. We are expecting more next week.

Importing from SD in the US is fine. The service is availble to be used. Keep in mind though if anything goes wrong you will have to send it back to the US as we won't honor the warranty on an imported product. Also the couriers tend to get quite busy this time of year with end user deliveries and tend to send out the VAT and handling charge bill after the event.

Hope this helps your decision.

I've had a wireless black on order from advancedmp3 for maybe 3 weeks now, as of today white is back in stock, black still out of stock and has never been in stock. I am getting frustrated now, the music on my pc is building up. I hope it comes very soon.

Not sure if this will make you feel any better, but some of us waited over 2 months for SB2s after they were launched... just think how good it will be when it finally turns up!

I had started off rushing at ripping my CDs when I placed my order - by the time it came, I had them all ripped, tagged, tidy...

That's good to hear Patrick... I have loadssss of backorders now with new
ones being placed all the time, so lots of stock asap please! Getting calls
every day from understandably impatient customers.

I do now suddenly have a few white wired-only ones in stock, if Richard
wants to switch to a white one? ;o)

Seems like everyone wants an SB3 for Christmas! Some of my customers will be
getting Qnap Nas units in their stockings too.

To be honest the main reason for not wanting white was memories of a
Sony portable TV in white plastic, after a couple of years and some
sunlight it had turned into a pale yellow which got darker every year.
Hopefully the plastic in the squeezebox is more UV proof.

I got mine from Scan.co.uk. Very helpful, although I did switch to a white one when I found they have these in stock ! Delivered the next day. They don't seem to have any SBs in stock at all at the moment. You can't really tell from the front whether it's a white or black one - biggest difference is the remotes colour. At least it stands out from the rest of the array of remotes I now have !

Wireless connectivity is poor - but that's another thread...

Well my SB3 (Black Wireless) arrived on Thursday from dabs.com.
So far I am very impressed. I looks even better that the photos, a really classy piece of kit. Trouble is it really shows up the cheap hi-fi I have it connected to! Time for another upgrade I think... :)

Glad I waited for a black one rarther than switching to the (apparenly more readily available white), black looks much better next to the brushed aluminum front, I think white would clash. Anyway thats a personal preference I guess.

Fantastic device, can't recommend it highly enough. Having had bad experiences with my wireless network (performance wise), I was nervous that the music would drop out etc.. but this was not the case at all, I dont know how big the buffer is on the SB3 but it works perfectly!

Only thing I couldn't get working was WPA2-AES, but I suspect that might be because my AP only supports WPA-AES (which I gather, is different).

Anyway works fine with WPA-TKIP.

64 Mb, 8 MB...which means if your file is less
than 8 MB as ~90% of MP3s with bitrates 192 or
less are, you can play the entire song without
fully loading the buffer!

I was concerned when I first started monitoring
buffer fullness as it often did not rise to 100%
at the start of the song and slowly emptied
downward as the song played, but then I realized
it was because the entire MP3 fit in the buffer
with room to spare and was loaded into it in the
first few seconds of song play.

Sean has often stated how big the buffer is but
you don't realize the implications until you can
see that it can fit most MP3s in there with room
to spare...

Audio T are still waiting to receive the 2 units promised ages ago. The latest information seems to be that they were actually going to be sent last Friday...but again, this appears not to have happened. Seriously (to Progressive), if I need to cancel the order with them just say so, rather than make commitments that are constantly broken.

As Patrick and Sean have said already, they are working as fast as they can to get stock out of the door to not only us but other customers around the world.

I can assure you that as soon as the stock arrives with us we prioritise every Squeezebox order regardless if it is for our trade or our end user customers.

As for Audio-T, their stock will be allocated out of our next shipment. There were other orders from other customers before theirs.

Our next delivery is due with us on Friday though at this moment in time we have no idea what time it will arrive. If it is early enough we will ship as much stock out as possible.

Thanks for the reply Paul. Obviously everything I hear is via Audio-T, but originally I was told they would be sent two units from the first batch which would arrive the following week (that was more than 3 weeks ago I think). Then I was told they were being sent last Friday, for arrival early this week. Now it appears there's no stock at all? I totally understand the reasons for the delay, so I am surprised the original message wasn't simply along the lines of "you'll have to wait x weeks", rather than the "they'll be sent today" type messages I've been receiving for the past few weeks.

The is a little like the children's game Telephone. Information will get
distorted as people repeat it.

Slim Devices and Progressive are the most reliable sources of information
about shipments to the UK. However we have experienced over a 300% increase
in demand over what we did last Christmas.

On the good side, we've never been better prepared for a surge in demand.
Supplies look good and we don't expect any problem filling everyone's
Christmas shopping list.

Thank you for your understanding.

Patrick

How do I remove the 'Musical note' from the display? I KNOW the music is
playing, I can hear it! I would like to use that space for more song info.

Also is it possible to create another 'format' for the info that is shown
whilst playing?

I am looking for something like a 1 or 2 pixel high, full width progress bar
while under it a large font scrolling song title, artist, etc.underneath.
(I'd also love to get the full width EQ under this like the screensaver too)
Unfortunatly, I am not a programmer, and I don't even play one on TV....)

Has this changed much from the SBG days?

Yes: you'd have to define it in Server setttings/Formats. It's then
available in the screensaver mentioned. Have a look at the screenshots -
they only show a few possibilities.

CavesOfTQLT

Front panel on mine seems okay, it's just the dreaded disappearing pixels syndrome that I've got. I'm operating mine on the lowest brightness level possible in order for all the display to show - bummer is, that I've got some relatives coming later today so it'll have to do. Would have preferred it brighter - 'shows it off' better. Oh well...

autopilot
2005-12-25, 18:08
Thats just what i have to do. The top half does not work, unless it on the lowest brightness setting.

After a few days, look at where the metal frontplate meets the display. It should be completely flush. I bet after a few days you will finds its not.

All this on top of the Slimserver software, which i find far too buggy for a retail product. CUE files are not supported anymore (even though its advertised as supporting CUE files), and this was a major selling point for me. That two major hardware faults and a few software faults, including a major feature being broken (at least for me it major). And all i an hearing so many other people complain of the same problems. I am very very unhappy about this whole experience and its left a very bad taste in my mouth. Very poor design and quality testing. If i have any problems with my replacement, this will be the last Slim Devices product i ever own and certainly will recommend that people dont buy them either.

Dom,I know how frustrating it can be when you buy a faulty product, especially when it's possibly your first experience with the company concerned, but might I suggest that you reserve judgement until you see how SD support your issues? I'm a UK customer on my second product and I've found the hardware quality to be excellent, the Slimserver software to be much more stable and capable than most commercial offerings but, above all, the customer support to be unparalleled. Many companies (much larger than SD) have teething problems with new product hardware, but few support customers with issues as well as Sean and co.

Also, with regards to at least one of the issues. Slim Devices have
very quickly acknowledged the fault, accepted responsibility and
agreed to an exchange; they have also suggested a fix that some
people might prefer to sending their box away.

Sure, and dont get me wrong because i love the squeezebox, in principle at least. I got a personal email from SD within hours saying sorry and that they would help me get a replacement if i had any problems getting a replacement sorted from Scan. So yeah, from a customer services point of view, im very happy so far. And being a first gen product, things can go wrong with the first batch (look at the xbox360 and PSP for example). Just venting my frustration at my faulty xmas pressent really, im sure it will all be sorted.

Best to check the forums. I'm aware of the posts but have not
bothered with details as I don't have an SB3.

Basically, loosen some screws and maybe use superglue to reglue the
panel. But *don't* take my word for it, read the relevant posts.
