View Full Version : 6.2.x unuseable for me

Ever since I updated to 6.2.1 I've had an issue with slimserver stopping on its own. Now I've updated to 6.2.1 and it seems, I cannot get thru a music library rescan without slimserver stopping.

Running on Win XP MCE (EMERALD). I had no issues w/ 6.1 and am considering downgrading. I'd be glad to help troubleshoot, but wasn't able to find an error log? Please advise.

Oh, and is there a site where I can download older versions of slimserver?

Can you look in the windows event log and see if there are entries
for the server stopping? That would help explain what's going on.

look in the event viewer and let us know what it is saying that has
caused the server to stop.

Thx Radish. Unfortunately 6.2.1 has become completely unusable for me, as I've cleared my music library and cannot get thru a rescan. Goin' back to 6.1.1, but will monitor the forums and hope for a cure.

Hoping for a cure is rather moot unless we know what's gone wrong.

Please check your Windows Event Log (Under Adminstration) for the message.

Thanks.

Hey Dean & Dan,
Thx for your quik resonse! Not sure how much this helps. I'm back running (stable) on 6.1.1 now:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Perl interpreter failed.

That's a very low-level error, probably due to a bad install. My
best suggestion would be to try a new download and reinstall.

(I also hate to say it, but it could be a hardware problem on your
system. I'd also consider running a diagnostic and making sure your
backups are up to date...)

Thx Dean,
I'll run some diags. System is P4 2.8C home built rig, configured as an always-on combo HTPC/media server. It has been stable as far as I can tell. I do believe that I ran memtest 86+ and Prime 95 without errors, when I initially put it together.

Slimserver 6.1.1 is running fine, so I'm not so sure the prob's on my end...? Anyway, it's late here, no more messin' with it t'nite. When I get round to running some stability tests, I'll post back. Thanks for your help.

Well, I hate to say this but I think your intuition is spot on. If it's a hardware problem, it must be one that is more of a conifguration isssue than a hardware "failure." I've been having precisely the same problem on my system with the 6.x versions and I've seen similar messages from a few others. I've tried reinstalling over-and-over again with the same problem... rescan crashes the server and perl interpreter failed in the EL. 5.4.1 always works fine with no such problems. Same system, same files, same settings. This smells like a 6.x problem to me, and I understand that is may indeed be limited to just a few system but without better error log info I'm not sure how to help diagnose or how to move on to 6.x.

I was premature in saying 6.1.1 is fine. It got thru the library update fine and worked throughout the evening, but when I got home from work yesterday, slimserver 6.1.1 had stopped on its own. I mentioned it prior, but in addition to my probs w/ 6.2.1 stopping during library update, it also exhibited this behavior of just stopping for no apparent reason.

Last night I ran memtest 86+ overnight w/ no errors. I'll configure prime95 and start it this evening, but I do not believe system instability is the cause. Although the XP-MCE machine is always-on, I do have Windows power management configured to stop the hard drives after 10-minutes of inactivity; any chance this setting could cause Slimserver to stop?

dfrazee,

It might be worth your while to startup slimserver via command line so that you can capture any debug output. Kill your running slimserver. Then open a Windows command shell,

Start-Run and enter

cmd

and hit Enter.

The change directories

cd \Program Files\SlimServer\server

(or wherever your slimserver is installed). The run:

.\slim.exe

and minimize the command shell window. If it crashes, you'll have output in the command shell window, that you can post here.

You don't need ActivePerl installed to SS run from the command line.

Just run slim.exe instead.

Other than that, an excellent suggestion!

yes, sorry, this is correct, and I editted my instructions above. I've been using nightly or svn builds for so long, i'd forgotten about slim.exe !

Thanks!

You can also just start slim.exe - with the same parameters and output. No
need to install ActivePerl.

running on XP Pro, Dell Dimension. Used to work fine on 6.1 and lower.

Update,
Ok, here's what went down last nite as well as some more background:

My MS MCE 2005 (emerald) machine serves multiple, defined purposes:
1. It is a dedicated HTPC, driving a HDTV via DVI.
2. It serves tunes via slimserver
3. It is a centralized media storage vault, housing digital photos, music, video and recorded TV.

Prior to moving slimserver to this machine, it was configured for S3 standby; which was working perfectly. That is the power button on the MCE remote would bring the HTPC in and out of S3; and the machine would come out of S3 automatically to record a TV show or download the TV guide info, then go back to sleep. Then came microsoft's rollup2 to MCE (emerald) which essentially broke S3. Now, as long as the MCE UI is open, the PC will not automatically go into S3. Power button still worked fine, but if the HTPC wakes for a guide download or scheduled recording it no longer goes back to sleep.

Between MS breaking S3 on MCE and slim devices (so far) only providing half-of the sleep-WOL solution (i.e. Squeezebox does not allow server to enter S3, keeping it awake w/ network activity); I decided to configure the HTPC as an always-on server. But, I don't want HDD's always spinning, so I configured power management for no S3, but HDD power-off after 30-minutes.

Ok, last night I started a Prime95 torture test and launched slimserver via command line. I then installed softsqueeze and started a playlist with repeat on. Finally, while I was working onsetting this up, MCE notified me that it was recoding "American Dragon" (for my 6yo). When I woke this morning, the TV recording was fine, slimserver was still-up, my Squeezebox2 was working and softsqueeze was still cranking out the playlist. I guess I should be happy, but I'm not so sure the problem has been either identified or fixed.

I'm wondering if the slimserver crash occurs when all players are turned off and the hard-drives are allowed to spin-down??

Update,
I'm wondering if the slimserver crash occurs when all players are turned off and the hard-drives are allowed to spin-down??

I'm running XP rather than MCE, but my machine is usually in that state (disks spun down, players off) for much of the day. Not seen this problem - although I did only recently update to 6.2.1, so I'll keep an eye on it.

...and I forgot to add, both Prime95 and Memtest 86+ reported 0 errors, so system stability does not seem to be an issue.

Tonight I'll leave slimserver 6.1.1 up, but without active clients nor running PC stress testing sw, the HDDs should have the opportunity to spin-down. If slimserver is up and running in the AM, I'll reinstall 6.2.1 and keep fingers crossed.

I launched slim.exe from cmd line and scanned the library. Got a ton of errors seemingly associated with incorrect playlists which ultimatey caused perl to crash:

Just an update and a THANKS for all who posted to help. Slimserver 6.2.1 is running stable after I deleted the playlists that were causing the errors. The lauch from cmd window trick was very helpful.
