View Full Version : Sorting Album Art by Artist vs. Album Title

In SlimServer, I would like to have the ability to browse the album art and have the art arranged by the artist first and secondly by year (or album title - if year isnt doable)

The interface for browsing by album art is fine except browsing by album title is a pain when you would like to see all the albums by a specific artist.

Is this a request that is not too far out?

Thanks for the time!

I believe if you set the ALBUMSORT tag (for FLAC) or TSOA tag (for MP3
files) then the server will use them whenever a sorted list of albums is
produced. One problem is that not all taggers support these tags.

I'm still poking around looking for an automated way to generate them
based on the values of the ARTIST, ALBUM and YEAR tags so I can have
something like "ARIST|YEAR|ALBUM" and have albums sort by artist, and
then within artist chronologically by year, and then by album name.
Haven't been able to put anything together yet, though.

Which Tagging programs do allow editing of AlbumSort on FLAC files? I currently use Tag&Rename, which makes it easy to edit tags on many tracks concurrently by creating masks. Only problem is that it doesn't support the AlbumSort tag at all.

I've never used it, but Helium2 seems to support TSOA:

http://www.helium2.com/tag_compatibility.php

I sent some email to the creator of Tag&Rename (my tagger of choice)
asking for TSOA support in a future release, but I haven't heard
anything back yet.

I tried Helium, but it only allows manual editing of the TSOA, and doesn't allow batch modification of an entire library using a template such as Artist-Year-Album.

Funnily enough, I also sent an email yesterday to the Tag&Rename folk asking for this. Hopefully they'll respond.

Have a look at Mp3tag (ignore the name - it works on most audio file formats):

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

You can set up "actions" in Mp3tag that will build tags from other tags, or from parts of the file name. And vice versa, you can rename files based on tag information or from parts of the file name.

I use two actions for this - one for individuals ("Miles Davis") and one for groups ("The Rolling Stones"). The difference being that the former swaps first/last name, while the latter just removes leading articles. Because of the difference, it would be nearly impossible to automate a script to run through your entire library and create the ALBUMSORT tag.

Here's what the 'individuals' Mp3tag action does for flac files:

1. Create tag ARTISTSORT and set it equal to ARTIST.
2. Using a regular expression, swap first and last name in ARTISTORT.
3. Set a temporary tag (Mp3tag has no variables to use in a multi-step action, but you can create tags and later discard them) of TMP_ALBUMSORT=ALBUM.
4. Using a regular expression, remove leading articles (the, los, les, etc.) from TMP_ALBUMSORT.
5. Set ALBUMSORT=ARTISTSORT|YEAR|ALBUM.
6. Discard TMP_ALBUMSORT by setting it = "".

Technically, it's not necessary to remove leading articles from either the album or artist name, since SlimServer can do this. I just choose to do it explicitly in the ARTISTORT and ALBUMSORT tags. The actual actions are just a little more complex than this, because I have it work on either FLAC or MP3 files, setting the appropriate tag according to the file's extension.

If you like, drop me an email and I could send you a zip file with my customized actions - they're each stored within a text file, so they could easily be installed on your system.

[ Good description of MP3TAG actions deleted. ]

I just sent you an email message, but I thought responding here would be
helpful as well. Perhaps you could also post your ZIP file as an
attachment via the forum -- that way others will be able to benefit from a
ready made solution. Seems like at least a few other people are trying to
figure out how to handle this issue nicely and without too much hassle.

Hello,

I could use some hand holding in getting this to work. I have .mp3 files separated in folders by Artist\Album. File name format is "Artist - Album - Title.mp3". When I'm in Browse Artwork I want SlimServer to display them by Artist\Year\Album is possible. I am using SlimServer v6.2.1.

MP3 tag tools I have are Mp3-Tag Studio 3 and Mp3tag. I have tried using Mp3tag to add a TSOA tag but apparently I'm not doing it right because SlimServer just ignores what I'm doing and just list them by Album like it always does.

If someone could give me specific steps I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Sorry for bumping a post, but I would like to thank whomever added this feature to 6.5.0!!!

Very much appreciated!
