View Full Version : Organizing Album "View by Artwork"

Is there any way to add to the long list of wishes to be able to view album art by Group. Listing it all in album name is one way to do it but I think it makes more sense to list by artist:

Beatles
<album art>

Cure
<album art>

Echo & The Bunnymen
<album art>

I would love to have this. Anyone else?

I'd say, take a number. preferrably #305:

One of the most requested SlimServer enhancements is a more flexible means of sorting & grouping in the various browse modes. Here's how to do this in the meantime, though there are some minor limitations:

Add an ALBUMSORT tag to all tracks (TSOA tag in id3 tags). Populate that tag with the artist name, followed by the album name. I prefer to have an artist's albums sorted chronologically, so I also insert the year before the album name. For example:

Amos, Tori|2005|Beekeeper
Beatles|1965|Rubber Soul
Beatles|1966|Revolver
Beatles|1968|Beatles [White Album]
Beatles|1969|Abbey Road
Cooder, Ry|1972|Into the Purple Valley
Newsome, Joanna|2004|Milk-Eyed Mender
Sexton, Martin|1996|Black Sheep

The only drawback to doing this is that in Browse Albums you'll get the same sort order - by artist instead of album title. Fine with me, as I find browsing by album title to be pretty much useless.

I like this idea very much, especially since I agree, browsing by album
title is kind of useless as is. That this also fixes browsing by artwork
(so that the artwork will then show up sorted by artist, rather than by
album name) is another plus.

Is there a good tool on Windows that will let me do this? (Heck, I run
Cygnus, so even a Unix tool might be OK.)

Ideally I'd like to automate this so that the tag would get populated as
a post-tagging step based on the values of ARTIST, ALBUM and YEAR. I
swear by Tag&Rename, but it doesn't look like it can handle this tag.
(I'll send some email to the developer, though, and request it.)

Thanks.
