so with the sb2/3 and firmware we have been given first native flac, then native wma. what are the chances we'll see native apple lossless support in a future firmware rev?

That depends entirely on Apple licensing that codec.

It's currently closed and not available for third-party use, except
through QuickTime, which is what we are doing.

Would it be a problem to use the reverse engineered ALAC decoder by
David Hammerton available at http://craz.net/programs/itunes/alac.html

i was thinking the exact same thing. i thought that one segment of the codec was open source, but i didn't remember whether it was encoding or decoding or where to read up on it. thanks for the link. so i guess the question is whether or not you could use this tool to make it work.
