View Full Version : Just bought a Squeezbox - should I take it back?

I bought a Squeezbox from a local stereo retailer yesterday, installed it, and love it. The sound quality for webradio is so vastly superior to either jacking my wireless laptop into my system, or "broadcasting" an FM signal from my computer via a Soundfeeder.

However, after accessing Slim's website, I now realize that it's the original Version 1.

Should I return the unit and request Squeezbox 2 or 3? I've got a decent 2-channel audio setup, with McIntosh preamp/amplification and big Klipsch Epic CF-4 loudspeakers - so the best possible sound quality is important to me. Thanks

You want at least a SB2. Especially as you are clearly an audiophile.
You might even want to join us nutcases over in the SqueezeBox audiophile
forum.

I'm boggled that someone is still selling SB2s. Are you sure it isn't a SB2?

Depends how much you paid for it! If you paid anything close to current retail prices for an SB2/3, then you have been seriously had, there is a big difference to the SB1 in numerous departments.

On the other hand if they sold it to you for say $100 then you probably can't grumble...

That all depends on how much you paid, etc. If you really did get a SB1, and it cost you about what a closeout SB2 would, I'd recommend taking it back. The SB2 internals are improved and the unit has enhanced functionality. Just make sure there is still SB2 inventory before you make your move.

I paid $250 + tax. I don't think they were intentionally trying to "put one over" on me - They're a local audio/video retailer of good repute. They didn't even have a functional Squeezbox on display, and didn't know much about the units. Perhaps they don't know that newer versions are available?

Are you sure it's a SB1 - it has the two line character based display
with each line equal size?

The SB3 might be on Slim's website already but there won't be any
available to buy until the 1st November.

I'd take it back. If they'd be so kind as to knock it's price down to about $100, then it's not a bad deal.

Where are you? Whose dollars, etc?

Thanks for all the kind advice. I sent an e-mail off to the Stereo Shop asking about upgrading to Squeezbox 2 or 3.

And yes, it IS version 1. When I try to access some of the screensavers, the screen displays "Must have Squeezbosx 2 to use" or something to that effect.

If you can return it and replace it with a 2 or 3, I would. The 2's
look the same as the 1's, but have a lot of capabilities the 1's do
not and never will. The 3's are the same as the 2's except for
appearance.

You might tell the retailer that what you wanted was a 2, and you
just realized when you got it home it was a 1.

Price paid is a good point. If it's close to the prices you can get
on the new SB2's then exchange it. If it's not, then it's up to you
to decide if the new features are worth the cost.

I know they had SB2's 2 days a go, as I ordered 3 of them. I like
the look of the new SB3, but it won't work in 2 of the 3 places I put
it, so I decided the time was ripe for upgrades all around.

BTW: I have 2 Squeezebox 1's and a SLIMP3--all in working order and
good condition--for sale. :-)

They probably don't know much about them. If they're agreeable,
maybe you can educate them. Heck, if you can get someone who's
interested, maybe you can get one of them to actually see what it can
do and get them as excited about them as we are here. :-)

This is not a good way to tell if it is an original SB1. The SB1 came in two forms. The first ones had a two line text display. The updated ones got a graphical display, but it is lower resolution than the SB2 display. There was an upgrade process to go from the text display to a graphical display.

Since the SB2 is on sale for $179 (wired-only version) $250 does seem quite high for a SB1.

Good news - I spoke to the store owner, and he's more than willing to exchange the unit. He offered to either order a Squeezbox 2 now, or wait until the Squeezebox 3 is available. I'll have to pay his cost differential - but at least I'll have the latest technology. It's not like I'm suffering by keeping the S-1 in my system for a week or so. It's a wonderful unit, and significantly superior in audio quality to my computer's soundcard.

Does anyone know if the S-3 will actually be available 11/1/05? If it isn't, perhaps I'll just have them order me an S-2 instead.

Pay the difference? The SB2 is now available for less than what you paid. The SB3, wired, is $1 less than what you paid. You need to do a little reading on this forum and indicate to these guys what the real prices are. Good luck - Pat
