View Full Version : Help needed: SBG upgrade display broken...

Here's my stupid story: I've had an SB1, upgraded to SBG with the display
upgrade. After a while the player didn't work any more. As I could not
access the player, nor ping or anything, I thought it was broken. I
therefore decided to to install the display upgrade on another SB1.

Guess what? The second went dead immediately. I couldn't believe this and
reconnected the old text display. The player started right away! Now I
have my two SB1s again - less the IR sensors.

I guess/fear I'll have to solder the IR sensor back on the player again.
Nothing I've done before. And what way do would I have to solder the
cable? My two IR modules aren't identical... I'm lost! Sean, please help
me!

there's a pic here showing how the IR board should sit and connect to the main board. Just wire it straight across to those three pads.

Unfortunately I think we're all out of the 280x16 displays but support@slimdevices may be able to help you get yours fixed.

The problem is that the two sensors I have aren't identical. If I put them
the same way, on will +/- be hidden behind the player's case. Let's try
some ASCII art (grr... my girlfriend has taken my camera!). I hope you
understand what I mean. Here are my two sensors

|---------|
| |
| ... |
| \|/ |
| |O| |
| ooo |
| .. |
| |
|---------|

|---------|
| |
| ... |
| \|/ |
| |O| |
| ooo |
| .. |
| |
|---------|

The ribbon is soldered to the ooo. Which one of these is no. 1?

I've contacted Felix of k55 at Zürich. He was kind enough to offer me that
first (now broken) update on the occasion of the SB2 launch party. They
still have it on their web shop. This would definitely be easier to fix
than if I had to buy a soldering iron first :-)

BTW: though there's sound coming from the players, they don't display
anything after the boot stage. I see how they connect to the network, but
afterwards they go black. Don't they work when there's no IR receiver
connected?

My nice artwork has been messed up by the forum. It should be clearer from

I've heard some elaborate excuses to get your girlfriend to let you buy an SB3, but this takes the biscuit. ;-)

Hey, she liked the new design! No need to kill my beloved players to
convince her. And I'd never kill my players today if I couldn't buy
another one _immediately_! Do you really think I could be without my
Squeezeboxen for _two_ weeks?!? :-)

Darn... this is serious!

I can't remember 100%, but I think we may have goofed on the first rev of the IR board and put the sensor towards the right side of the board instead of the left. Not a problem, they just had to be rotated 180 degrees with the cable turned.

You mean pin 1 or 3 don't matter, as long as 2 stays in the middle?

Hey Michael

Sorry to hear about your trouble. If Felix (K55) cannot help you I can offer you to do the necessary soldering. Just let me know. Maybe on the SB3 lauch party (I guess I could convince Felix to have one) or we could meet and I bring my soldering iron. I wanted to talk to you about the webinterface anyway to have a better integration of the IR blaster interface.
But not this weekend since I am laying in bed with a bad ear infection. :(

He still had three on stock. Two of them should be on their way to the
wild west of Switzerland (just to be brought back to Bern in a few
weeks...).

From Felix' mail: "Felix Müller lötet sonst gerne" :-)

If I knew when exactly we will get the new SB, we can immediately start planning the launch event :)
