I don't have any WiFi kit at the moment. I don't really want an expensive complicated router, so would this work ok? Any issues/things i should know?

That should be fine, you just need to set up your network as 'Ad-Hoc'. Some people have found USB adapters to perform less well than PCI cards but I can't really comment on that. If you go the PCI card route, bear in mind that the antenna may well be partially screened by being stuck down the back of your PC case. At least with the USB adapter, you should be able to attach it to a USB lead and play about with the position.I improved the signal strength with my PCI card massively by spending a tenner on a wee remote antenna.

PS. I assume your PC has USB2 ports. USB1.1 might not be able to support 54Mbps.

In fact, there's no way in the world it would support 54Mbps! I believe USB1 is just fast enough for 11b, but that's your limit.
