View Full Version : Moose 0.05

Hi all,

I've been busy the last few weeks tweaking and adding stuff
to Moose - my little windows front-end for slimserver.

It now properly supports network shares, so should in theory
work ok for Linux and Mac servers. Also, for windows servers
with shortcuts, I've implemented an 'alternate link' kind of feature
to use whilst re-scanning.

There are a host of other new bits including a now-playing
dialog with a thumbnail and seeking ability.

The new version, along with an updated page, is down:
http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove

Oh, should all work on 6.2 as well now.

Thanks for all your comments, praise and suggestions.. Always
welcome..

I gave it a brief run last night and as far as I got playing with it it looked great, very responsive just what I was after, especially being able to skip to a place on the song with one click of the mouse.

However I couldn't seem to get the add to playlist function to work. I could double click on a song and get that playing but it wouldn't add.

I will play around with it a bit more over the weekend and report back in more detail.

My system is Windows XP , Athlon XP2.6, 1gb RAM.

Hi,

I downloaded the latest version from the link, but can't seem to play any songs.

Moose scans my music collection on a separate server okay but doesn't actually play any of the tracks.

I have tried to log into Slimserver with both the CLI and Web UI, but no result. Moose keeps saying that "An operation was attepmted on something that isn't a socket".

Is there some glaring mistake I'm making? Any help would be appreciated.

Music in WMA Lossless, Windows XP Pro, Slimserver 6.1.1 running over LAN.

Cheers,
-M

Hi Matt,

Sorry for not replying sooner.. Did you get any further with
your add to playlist issue ? I know the add button was broken
in the previous build (0.03), but I made some changes which
fixed it on 6.2.. Possibly it's still broken on older servers ?
Which server build are you running ?

Thanks,

Ah, now this sounds like it could be either the wrong server IP / Port in
the options, or more likely the wrong username & password. If you're
server's not password-ed, make sure both these fields are blank in the
options.

Also, if your MAC address has letters in, it might be worth making sure
they're lower-case. I noticed the cli doesnt like upper-case MAC addresses,
so I convert them to lowercase internally. I may have missed one or two..

Failing that, it could be a firewall issue.. The error basically means it
couldnt initiate a telnet session with the server.

Hope that helps,

I have to confess I am yet to re-test the Moose as I have just reconfigured my setup and moved all my music and slimserver to a new HTPC in the attic.

This has been a pain to setup and I have not yet got the courage to move all the music to a shared folder so I can access it from my laptop.

I was using 6.1 but with the new computer I have switched to 6.2 so it should be interesting to see how it goes.

As soon as the missus has stopped watching Friends for the Nth time I will be able to give it a go and let you know how I get on.

Okay she has finished.

Firstly add to playlist does indeed work correctly, however I now get a error message (below) if I simply want to play the track (i.e. click on play and not add).

I am not sure what the difference between Name and Date tabs are above the list of artist name. Clicking on Name brings up some weird album names as artists, clicking on Date is a more sensible list.

Would it be possible to only show music files at the bottom and not all the other chuff such as album art etc.

Could you also bring the Add button closer to the list of songs or have a right click or button shortcut to add it. For me simply clicking on the song should add rather than play, as this is what I would be doing the most.

Apart from these little gripes it is great, I love the quickness and simplicity of it and also the fact you can click on the time bar to skip to that place in the song.

Thanks for the feedback Matt..

I'll fix the play problem with the next build.. Looks like a problem
caused by older server builds (and my dodgy c sharp code).. I
tend to use/test on a week-old nightly 6.2, and occasionally on 5.4..

The Name and Date tabs control the sort order of the list. Name sorts
alphabetically by the text in the list, and Date sorts by the folder's
date. Theory is that newly added (or moved) music will appear
at the end of the list if sorted by date.

Point taken about filtering non-music files. Reckon it needs a couple of
display modes - 'music' and 'chuff' ? :-)
In chuff mode it could do something useful when double-clicking
too - rather than trying to queue jpg and nfo files and taking out the
server.. :-)

Add mode ? Yeah, right-click menus will be coming soon.. Also thinking
of CTRL+double-click to add to playlist.. Should be in the next build..

Have fun,

To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this

The application must also be compiled with debugging

Ok.. I've just put a new build of Moose up..

* Should hopefully fix the problems people are having with the Play
button.

* Added a 'music-only mode' in the songs list, which is currently
the default. If you want to see ALL the files as before, right click the
songs list and it'll toggle between the two modes.

* CTRL+double-clicking on any list will now peform an 'add to playlist'
rather than a 'play'.

* Probably some other stuff too.. I think the year feature in the now
playing dialog is new.. Not sure..

Enjoy...

Hmmmm... The latest rev doesn't appear to have fixed the problem I noted previously. Still can't play any tracks. Same error message. BTW: I'm running the latest nightly (10/21) on a windows XP SP2 rig with all of the latest .NET service packs installed. All my tracks are FLAC's.

What else can I do to help troubleshoot?

Dr Lovegrove

Strange.. Almost identical to my setup too..

Might be worth trying the 'Debug log file' option in the file menu.

Turn it on, then open the preferences dialog and hit 'ok', (which
forces a re-connect), then try and play a track, then close moose..
A log.txt file should be created alongside moose.exe. If you email
me the file (drlovegrove (AT) gmail (DOT) com) I should hopefully be able
to sort the problem.. Oh, feel free to remove the username/
password line.. ;-)

Thanks,

I have had a good play with the new version and the play function certainly works.

I like the CTRL double click to add tracks to the playlist and have found that it is a very quick way of building a long playlist.

I have however found that the odd track will not add properly and will just be a blank entry on the playlist i.e. song, song, blank, song, song etc I need to play a bit more with this to see if there is any trend or whether it is just random.

On the useability front I find that the tracklisting in the bottome frame is a bit cramped and there seems to be no way of increasing it. Making the window bigger increases the size of the two top frames but not the bottom one. Would it be possible to increase the size of it or possibly have it to the right of the other two so they are all side by side.

Great work though it really is responsive and makes changing music with the slimserver a piece of cake.

Ah yes, good point.. Check out the new 0.08 that I've just uploaded..
It's now got a grip-bar type control which lets you size the songs list.

Just uploaded 0.08 which should hopefully trap/fix the problem.

I've also added some extra diagnostics to the log-file code. If you
find it's still not displaying any time information, it would be
interesting to see a log.

Looks cool. However, much of my use is over SSH tunneling to my slimserver, which means that I cannot access the raw files in my music directory, at least as things currently stand. I'm wondering if the "Now Playing" control panel can be used as a standalone (or with squeezebox) to display what is currently playing and give some basic control like prev/next track?

If your slimserver's running windows (which i suspect isnt the case), you
could run moose directly on it to build the .moo file, then copy it remotely..

Yeah, the now playing side of things is just CLI driven and should work
regardless of whether you can see the files or not, so could be made
standalone. I guess if the main selection window wasnt so pervasive it
would be better. Hmm..

1. okay. Surprise surprise (not sure why you guessed otherwise though), I'm using winxp on both ends. So I generated and copied the moose.moo into the same dir as the moose.exe executable on my remote machine. Initially, still no connection. GUI displayed "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket."

Turns out it was a simple problem: I forgot to set up putty to ssh tunnel port 9090.

2. The app would be a bit more sensible to me if the Now Playing screen were always on, and the track selector were toggled on/off, rather than the way it works now (pretty much the opposite).

Also, it would be ideal if the Now Playing could include (probably just to the right of the current/elapsed time in the lower left corner) a set of buttons like at the bottom of the playlist window, for prev track/pause/next track.

mkosma

Oddity on track display:

Now Playing is now showing the album art, and timer bar. I'm listening to Random Tracks.

The Track and Album display is jumping back and forth about once a second. Below the heading "Track [ 11 of 20 ]" it alternates between showing "[1993] Message In%" and "02 Driven To Tears (Live).flac". This is the filename I gather.

Below the heading "Album" it alternates between showing "The Police (1993)" and "[1993] Message In A Box - Disc 3 (1993)"

fyi, my music is organized as follows:

c:\MUSIC_ARCHIVE\Rock\The Police\[1993] Message In A Box - Disc 3\02 Driven To Tears (Live).flac

where "Rock" matches genre tag, "The Police" matches Artist, 1993 matches year tag, "Message In A Box - Disc 3" matches the album tag, "02" matches the track number, and "Driven To Tears (Live)" matches the track name.

Not sure why I get such an overabundance of 1993s - it was a good year, but still. (And of course 1993 is not really the right year to associate with Driven To Tears, but that's a problem with my tagging of compilations).

mattybain
2005-10-25, 11:16
I've been beaten to it, I have to agree with the point that the Now Playing window should always be visible with the Track listing screen popping up when required (could a button toggle it on or off?). Also buttons to control the volue, play, skip and rewind on the Now Playing screen would be great.

Good job on resizing the tracklist that makes it much easier to see.

Problem with tracks coming up as blanks on the slimserver seems to just be for tracks with any sort of punctuation like ()*. Excuse me whilst I just pop downstairs and see if it is playing - yep it says error cant open file for <Blank>. What could be causing that?

I eagerly await the next revision.

mattybain
2005-10-25, 11:20
That's a subtlety I missed, for the "blank" tracks the Now playing window shows the proper track tagging. Not sure if it is important but thought I should mention it.

Ok, just put a new version up - 0.09..

I've hopefully fixed the punctuation and accented characters in
filename/path problems. Bit of a nightmare. Previously the tracks I
was telling the server to play were relative to the server root, but
it didnt seem to like this when there were %E6 type characters in the
path, so I had to pass in the full path to the mp3 - drive letters and
everything.. Great.. Everything was working.. until I tried a .lnk
file.. Arghh.. Anyhow, to cut a long story short, when I scan, I now
build a list of .lnk files and their targets and store this in the
..moo file. When resolving a track which has a .lnk in the path, I use
this cached .lnk target to get the full absolute path to the mp3
file..

So, anyhow, fingers crossed it should work a bit better now.. The .moo
file-format's had to be changed to accomodate the .lnks, so it may ask
you to rescan the next time you fire it up.

I've also included the current playlist feature I've been working on.
The screenshot on the site shows what to expect. It's pretty basic -
it lists the currently queued up tracks and allows you to jump about
them via double-clicking. It's very much work-in-progress, and should
get a bit slicker in future releases..

Oh, and another feature's the little 'M's in the album list and
playlist.. They show the rough file-types for the item.. For an album
containing flac files, you should get an 'F' instead of an 'M', and
for oggs, you'd get an 'O', etc..

Any problems, etc, give us a shout.. Enjoy..

I just installed it and have been giving it a good thrashing on my laptop (ooh err)

First impressions are that you have fixed the punctuation problem and all files like this now play fine.

Either I am being stupid and missing something obvious or the playlist function has not made it to the version I downloaded. I can't see any evidence of a playlist function on either the Moose.exe or your website. Maybe it is a web cache thing as my ISP is notorious for this.

Love the M,W function I will actually find this very useful as I am about to go through a process of killing my M4A files and this shows me where they are. Although I have just noticed that MP3 and M4A both get M's, could you possibly change this?.

For me to make this into an application I would use above the web interface you need to (just a basic list ignoring things like internet radio).

1) Smarten up the list of files in an album, the current layout is not intuitive for me, I would much prefer another list to the right of the album just scrolling down and not across (if that makes sense). I don't know why, it just feels wrong at the moment.
2) Have a now-playing playlist (which I guess you are working on)
3) Include Play,FF,RW buttons, volume on the Now Playing screen
4) Have the now playing screen always on (a bit like Softsqueeze) or incorporate it into the Moose main screen.

But as it is I am going to use it now to get some new playlists up and running, much easier than using the web interface.

I have noticed one small oddity, I have an album by the Waifs called A brief history.

On slimserver it shows up correctly under the Waifs but on Moose it comes up as the artist being "A Brief History". I have checked the tags and they seem to be all correct. Most baffling although I do seem to remember have some problems with this album before so it is probably the tagging.

Can't understand why SS and Moose would be reporting different things though.

Excellent.. Bit of a sledgehammer and nut solution, but it should hopefully
be pretty robust now..

Ah, possibly a dialog sizing issue ? Moose remembers dialog sizes,
so you may need to increase the now playing dialog's height to see the
new controls ?

Ahh, good point.. Yup, it's just reading the 1st character of the extension
at the mo.. I'll make M4A's go to '4's..

Dunno.. Guess it depends how you use it.. For me I tend to just select
albums and ignore the song list - hence why it's tucked away down the
bottom.. I was going to tart up the selection window at some point, so
might offer a few layout schemes.. Easy enough to do..

Aye..

Yup.. Coming soon.. Bit torn between having a complete remote control
window - like softsqueeze, or adding them to the now playing dialog..
Probably end up doing both.. Need to move them from the bottom of the
selection window anyhow.. :-)

Yup.. Need to do a major app re-shuffle.. Now playing's becoming
more and more the main focus..

Hmmm, does seem a bit wierd. Might be worth turning on moose's debug
log feature on and seeing what SS's returning for artist in its status
commands ?

Resizing Now Playing means I can see a Refresh button and a big white box with nothing in it. I am assuming that this is where the playlist is visible and that it is just not working for me (yet).

** Okay I can see it on your website now, looks good, this is still not happening for me**

The Waifs issue is intriguing me, playing the album the tags are identified correctly by Moose just on the list of artists it is not.

Will investigate further.

What is the number to the left of Tags which for me fluctuates between 64 and 68 - is this signal strength?

I know how to turn on the debug feature but do not know what I am looking for in the file.

Weird, the list should be populated automatically, but hitting refresh should
force the server to send a fresh list.. Are you running 6.2 ? I've only tested
on that so far..

The log feature will create a log.txt file alongside moose.exe. If you load that
into a text editor and have a look towards the bottom. There should be lines
with CLI: <mac> status - 1 tags... Then after each of these there is a line of
reply from the server. In these reply lines, search for "artist%3A" and see
what lies to the right of that. This is what the now playing dialog displays
when in tag mode. (When in path mode the album will be the parent directory
name of the song file, and the artist the parent directory of that).

Hope that helps. Gmail seems to be messing me about today.. Hmmm,

6.2b2 - 4870 have dabbled with 6.2 but for some reason for me it is way slower than this beta.

I will go back to 6.2 and test it now.

Upgraded to 6.2.1 - 4900 the current playlist is working fine now.

Would it be possible to have the ability to delete and move items on the palylist? it also makes it more important, for me anyway, to have the nowplaying always on top.

This is starting to look really good! I just wished I had some programming ability left (years of neglect) to be able to help you develop this.

Ahh, yes, just installed the official 6.2 here (been using the betas) and
it's now doing 'weird stuff'.. Hmmm.. I'll look into it and sort it shortly...

Yup, all on the list..

No worries.. Im actually enjoying coding it, which is something that's
not happened for quite a few years now.. It's good to give something
back to the community as well..

Not quite sure what's going on here, but it seems if you have multiple
players and one of them's turned off, slimserver sends out huge
buffers of repeated information about the turned off player (moose
puts slimserver in listen mode), then embeds the information i need
about the current player at random offsets in the buffer. Is this a
known issue ? I guess it could be something my end. A workaround seems
to be to have all the players turned on.

If you want any donated coding hours as help - let me know, c#/dotnet
is something I'm more familiar with (compared to Perl!).
If you want to upload it to something like SourceForge, or even set up
a local subversion server, you might get some useful coding input.

Cheers
Geoff

Great stuff.. Thanks for the offer Geoff.. Opensourcing is certainly
something im thinking about - want to tidy the main internal architecture
up somewhat first though..
