View Full Version : Problems with multi-disc albums

I'm experiencing a problem with multi-disc albums and wondering if
it's just me or if anyone else has problems.

Setup:
Win XP SP2, SlimServer 6.2 nightly from 2005-09-18.

Symptoms:
Multi-disc albums don't display correct disc numbers. I have a lot of
2 disc sets in FLAC which use the DISCNUMBER tag. In Slimserver both
discs show up as disc 2 although all tracks are listed in the correct
track and disc order. They play OK too. I also have one 4 disc set in
MP3 format. These use the PARTINSET tag. Only the first two discs show
up, both labelled disc 4 though, the other two discs are nowhere to be
seen.

None of the above are tagged as various artists and all was ok until a
week or so ago.

Thanks for any help.

I've deleted the database and SlimServer has done a full rescan. I'm
using today's nightly (2005-09-22). The missing albums are back but
I've still got the problem with the multi-disc albums. No matter how
many discs in a set, all discs take the number of the last disc, so in
a 4 disc set I have 4 lots of disc 4 but the tracks are all listed
differently for each disc 4.

I've checked that "Treat multi-disc sets as multiple albums" is selected

Anyone else have any ideas?

A couple of other minor points I've noticed are:

1) In both Default and Fishbone skins when viewing artwork I have 94
items displayed despite having 60 entered in the box for "Items per
page". When I browse artists I get 103 items on the first page
including All Albums.

2) When using the gray version of Fishbone the font used to be a
larger size, this seems to have reverted back to the smaller size.

I'd be grateful for any help.

The browse lists are paged by letter, so are split at a letter boundary. The
items per page setting does not apply in this case (except maybe as a rough
guide). The preference really only applies to playlists lately.

some font changes are deliberate, to avoid overlapping in IE. IE seems to want
to display fonts slightly larger than firefox. Some fonts may have changed by
accident during a HUGE rewrite. Which particular text is the issue?

That's fine. I only mentioned it since there is a specific setting in
Slimserver. I have it set to 60 normally since (as somebody else on
here mentioned) it's divisible by 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 and so makes the
display a little neater when browsing artwork. All rows are filled for
most window sizes.

I mainly notice it in the list of artists when using Browse Artist,
the current font size is 7pt. I just tried the modified files that
were submitted by MeSue and that uses a 9pt font size. Some of the
other fonts were a little larger too but I haven't checked them all.
This is probably just me being a little fussy, but with my latest flat
panel monitor the pixel size is smaller and the larger font size is
much, much easier to read. This is with IE.

Thanks for your help

I'm still experiencing problems with multi-disc albums. So tonight I
installed the latest 6.1.2 nightly and noted the results below (it
works) and then installed the latest 6.2 nightly and noted the results
(I don't think it works correctly).

If no one has any suggestions I'll raise a bug.

For all of the following examples, Group Discs uses the 'Treat
multi-disc sets as multiple albums' option

With SS6.1.2 (2005-10-03) using Browse Artists under Hed Kandi I get
the following:

All Songs
Winter Chill 06.02 (Disc 1)
Winter Chill 06.02 (Disc 2)
Winter Chill 06.03 (Disc 1)
Winter Chill 06.03 (Disc 2)
Winter Chill 06.04 (Disc 1)
Winter Chill 06.04 (Disc 2)
Winter Chill 3 (Disc 1)
Winter Chill 3 (Disc 2)

and under Bob Marley & The Wailers I get:

All Songs
Catch A Fire
Exodus [Deluxe Edition] (Disc 1)
Exodus [Deluxe Edition] (Disc 2)
Kaya
Legend [Deluxe Edition]
Rastaman Vibration
Songs Of Freedom (Disc 1)
Songs Of Freedom (Disc 2)
Songs Of Freedom (Disc 3)
Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4)

which is how I think it should be displayed.

With SS6.2 (2005-10-03) using Browse Artists under Hed Kandi I get the
following:

All Songs
Winter Chill 06.02 (Disc 2)
Winter Chill 06.03 (Disc 2)
Winter Chill 06.04 (Disc 2)
Winter Chill 3 (Disc 2)

and under Bob Marley & The Wailers I get:

All Songs
Catch A Fire
Exodus (Deluxe Edition) (Disc 2)
Kaya
Rastaman Vibration
Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4)

which then makes it a pain to try to select just one disc from a
multi-disc album.

In the last case the tracks listed under Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4)
show up in the following manner:

4-1. Judge Not from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-2. One Cup Of Coffee from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-3. Simmer Down from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
....
....
4-24. Mr. Brown from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-1. Screw Face from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-2. Lick Samba from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-3. Trenchtown Rock (Previously Unreleased Alternate Mix) from Songs
Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
....
....
4-18. I Shot The Sheriff (Live) from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-1. No Woman No Cry (Live At The Roxy) from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4)
by Bob Marley
4-2. Who The Cap Fit from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-3. Jah Live from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
....
....
4-18. Time Will Tell from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-1. Africa Unite from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-2. Survival from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
4-3. One Drop from Songs Of Freedom (Disc 4) by Bob Marley
....
....
4-18. Redemption Song (Live In Pittsburgh) from Songs Of Freedom (Disc
4) by Bob Marley

although the disc numbers are wrong (except for disc 4) all the tracks
are in the correct order, disc 1 first, disc 2 etc.

Thanks for any help.

I've also had problems with this functionality, running a recent 6.2,
with the same setting for multi-disc albums. In fact, I get NO "(Disc
N)" labels appended to my album titles.

Could someone please confirm what the actual tags are that should be
added for MP3 and FLAC? I have DISC and DISCC in all cases. Based on
earlier threads, I understand that the DISCC is redundant, but taking
it out didn't help, and leaving it in helps makes the anal part of me
happy. From this thread it looks like it should be PARTINSET /
DISCNUMBER, but that's the first I've heard of this.

While we're at it, could someoone also post the definitive list of
tags used for multi-artist discs as well?

If someone knows where to find this stuff in the source, that would be
as good - I'm happy to go and take a look.

So a quick note from someone that knows the following would help a lot:

* Correct tag to use for MP3s to indicate disc number

* Correct tag to use for FLACs to indicate disc number

* Is there a way to get '(disc x of y)' - if so, what tags?

* Tag names (apart from ARTIST) that affect multi-artist behaviour?

Note that I'm not too concerned about whether the tags are supported
or not in which tagging programs (I use MP3Tag which supports
user-defined tags).

Thanks
Geoff

I don't know if it's 'correct' but all my flac and mp3 multi-disc sets
use the DISCNUMBER tag. This worked with both 6.1.2 and 6.2 nightlies
until a few weeks ago when the behaviour of 6.2 seemed to change,
6.1.2 still works.

> * Is there a way to get '(disc x of y)' - if so, what tags?

I believe this is added by Slimserver based on the DISCNUMBER tags. It
can be changed by altering the selection under Server Settings ->
Behavior -> Group Discs. Choosing 'Treat multi-disc sets as multiple
albums' displays the (disc X of Y). Choosing 'Treat multi-disc sets as
a single album' doesn't display disc info.

Can't help on this one.

I have raised a bug:

that Dean is looking into.

Just to clarify a point, I know in the first message I said the mp3
files used the PARTINSET and they did then. Since that time I've used
foobar2000 to apply replaygain settings to them. I believe foobar
rewrites all the tags (I know it deleted all the album art I had
embedded) and it must have changed to the DISCNUMBER tag.

None of the flac files have been changed though, as replaygain
information was added when the flacs were created.
