The link is picking up the ')' and '*' at the end of the link with me, so
try it without any of that...although the error message is probably more
interesting and informative that the actual thread :)

It worked for me. It said the Squeezebox 3 is coming out in a couple months that is totally redesigned...

Although it seemed very fictional, since SB2 just came out.

I better hold off on buying those two additional SB2s I was planning. Then maybe I'll also wait for the audiophile version of the SB3.

My guess is that this is random blowing smoke. Why come out with the SB2 then less than 12 months later come out with a SB3?

~DRM / "Whatever it takes"

If they want a box that will work with all the fancy for pay services
that everyone is asking for and the current box either can't do it, or
does not have the required hardware security to make the partners
happy. Or at least that would be one plausible reason.

Strip the )* after the 6178 and you'll read the thread.
Strange forum, where there's only subject lines and no message bodies....
Anyway, I don't believe it until I hear it from SlimDevices themselves..

Then again, why not? If it's priced the same or not much higher then will be argued that those buying a new SB3 are only gaining value in the new model.

Unless Slim Devices changes the way they release products, then I'm sure there will be unfortunate people buying SB2's just weeks before the SB3 is announced, whether that's tomorrow or two years from tomorrow. Makes it very tough on potential customers.

The post over at AA may be pure speculation, may be based on fact, or it may be someone throwing a monkey wrench into the works.

They've been too active around here lately to be releasing a new
product. Typically it seems they go "silent" for a couple of
weeks where they just pretty much disappear up until they
announce the new product.

Here are the SB3 features:
- cheap LCD display,
- no digital outputs,
- wma and real decoding in firmware,
- ability to connect to a "guest" SqueezeNetwork account out of the box,
- new name: "SqueezeRadio",
- price $99 for wired and $149 for wireless box,
Disclaimer: I have no idea what are SilimDevices future plans. I just
believe that it would be a terrific option and a money maker for the
company. And it would not upset any of the current SB2 owners :)
Cheers,

Don't forget the "Alarm" and "Snooze" buttons. And sell it at WalMart so I can buy it for a discounted $87.98.

Funny guy, Josef.
WMA and real audio would require something like Windows CE
in the box. Which would not only miss your price points,
but would bring shame upon the good name of SlimDevices
for turning to the dark side.

You forgot to point out that it will also be component size as
well as be available in a boombox version.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of devices on the market which are not
based on Windows CE and still decode WMA. The Ubicom chip inside SB2 is
capable of doing just that.
I am not a big fun of MS solutions myself. However, there are many good
stations on the net that stream in WMA. That's a fact. And SlimDevices road
map clearly states that they plan to support as many formats as possible.

No problem, pal. Just having some fun speculating... I agree that these
kind of posts are silly, but they show that we, customers, could be
passionate about the box.
I am happy with my SB2 as much as I could ever be. Would recommend to
anybody anytime, regardless of any future SlimDevices products.

For people asking "why" let's just say that Slim has some serious competition on their hands from Sonus, Roku and others and staying complacent is not going to get them where they need to be.

I would predict that SB3 has more integration with subscription services and possibly an all new remote control design.

It makes absolutely no sense for it to be a "budget" player. It could be so "redesigned" that it requires new software and is not compatible with SB1 and SB2 (although that's unlikely they might have to break with the current software to support an all new architecture).

seems to me like slim devices has always liked the niche market instead of the mass market. frankly i think we slim customers have benefited from them NOT pandering to the pay services. mass market consumers are in for a RUDE awakening when they finally realize they did not actually purchase that song from itunes but where just renting it. drm is doomed to fail because the techies will always be able to crack it and joe sixpack will only be frustrated when trying to merge music from two or more different services or trying to reload/restore their music collection after a major crash.
