View Full Version : Status indicator for built-in vs server decoding?

The SB2 supports native FLAC decoding. I think that is configurable at Server Settings -> File Types. A couple of questions:

1. If both “FLAC decoding at Server” and “built-in FLAC decoding” are checked, which one takes precedence?

2. Is there an easy visual indicator to tell whether SB2 is decoding FLAC natively vs a server-transcode?

the server will try to play a file with no conversion at all, ideally.
if the input format doesn't match any natively supported type or if the
"built-in" option has been disabled in file types, then it will look
for a conversion in order of preference. For SB this is FLAC, WAV,
MP3. SB1 is WAV then MP3 and slimp3 plays mp3 only. the first enabled
conversion is used, seemlessly.

You can check a song's file type from the songinfo page of the web UI,
or the trackInfo mode in the player (press RIGHT from the track
display). Native file types will always play native if they are
enabled. there is no display, aside from the check boxes in server
settings->file types.

If your player is set for bitrate limiting, then all output is forced
to mp3 at the specified bitrate. The trackinfo will show the converted
rate (as "converted to xxx") in trackInfo, and the Now Playing section
of the web interface will also show this.

kdf,
What about kbelinski's second question?

2. Is there an easy visual indicator to tell whether SB2 is decoding?

From what I gather, it doesn't sound like there is an easy way to tell... For those of us with mild to severe OCD, it would be handy if there was a line in the playing songs track info that displayed some additional info (e.g. FLAC - Transcoded from Server, FLAC - Decoded Onboard)

Feature Request?

As KDF says, there's no "easy visual indicator". However, you can
definitely check the server. If it's running a FLAC decoder, then you know
that the SB2 isn't directly decoding FLAC. If, however, you know that the
file is FLAC, and no FLAC decoder is running, then you know that the SB2
must be directly decoding FLAC.

just look it up. Why does everything have to be spoon fed at one glance?
you can find the input type (simple press right and down a few), and you have
the checked file types in settings. Which, unless you have messed with, respond
just as I have already explained.

you can't have EVERYthing on the front page.

Because folks =do= mess with it... for instance: when using replaygain encoded FLAC's, etc. It would be a great addition to the INPUT type line... no need to add another line. But IMO encoding type (onboard or serverside) does provide valuable additional information. I agree, EVERYthing upfront only serves to confuse the user... but contextually relevant info, made intuitively accessible is good design.

Relax. Find your happy place.
It's only a suggestion. I assume all feature requests are prioritized. Enhancments are probably at the bottom of the queue. No need to worry.

Don't make me pull the kitty on you.

Sounds reasonable, please file on http://bugs.slimdevices.com/

exactly, so they should know they have disabled the built-in.

Nice. Real nice, kdf... ever consider a career in public relations?

I did say please? Why? Am I not allowed to express an opinion? What makes me so
different from yourself? I happen to recall a thread about a whole new UI,
mentioning clutter and slowness. Just where do you think all the clutter and
slowness might come from? I happen to prefer a fast response, and having to
take time parsing out information so that (increasingly) more info is available
in every view goes against what I want. Strangely, I'll stil write the code
becuase its being asked. Just don't expect me to simply say every single idea
is fabulous. Don't like it, tough. I believe
I've spent a fair amount of time to your benefit as well.
