Long time "slimophyte." I have 3 Squeezeboxen1 utilizing the last 5.4.1 branch under Windows with no problems... it's rock solid. I like to avoid the "early version blues" so I've been waiting for v6 to stabilize before retiring v5.

Anyone care to comment on the overall performance of the current 6.1 public release and how it compares to 5.4? Are crashes common? Skips? Dead air? Etc? Etc? Etc?

The 6.1 release appears to be far more stable to me than 5.4 is/was. Watching the CVS commits shows many core improvements that have been occurring.

i'm in the 'don't fix it if it's working' school. i'm still running 5.4.1
under linux and haven't rebooted in months. i do occasionally lose
connection to slimserver and have the occasional wireless issues (not
related) due to the distance from my AP but i'm quite happy. i also never
use the 'browse music folder' which *is* painful under 5.x . if i needed
that i'd consider upgrading. i will probably go to 6.x eventually when the
post-new release bug chatter dies down a bit.

really, i'm waiting for the compilation album issue to be resolved which
will bring my artist count (and time it takes to scroll through artists)
down by almost 20%. see:

Those two statements kind of contradict each other, don't they? 6.x
will be truly stable once the core improvements stop getting committed
on a regular basis.

- Marc, still running 5.4.1 for the very same reason*

down by almost 20%.

I'm planning on trying the new version with that functionality too - but the reduction should be more dramatic for me (~3300 down to 270). From the threads I've been reading I'm not convinced it's perfect for my situation yet but it certainly looks like an improvement.

While I have the same "don't fix it" philosophy on major Windows
applications, I have been regularly upgrading (5.4.1 through 6.1) and have
found significantly less reliability and browser speed on the 6.X versions
(I use a laptop and IE to control SlimServer running on another CPU). The
5.4.x was really rock solid for me as well. I have had more server crashes
with 6.1, and more problems with internet radio as well.

But - I do have faith that this will eventually be resolved. I still do
recommened the SB to friends, but I am getting tired of providing technical
support for them....

I've been using the 6.1 nightlies since early May, currently using the
6.1.x nightlies. I've never had SlimServer crash and no gaps (other
than a bug related to sync'ed players), stalls etc.

All on XP with ~13000 flac tracks played by 2 x SB2 and 1 x SBG.

Great info and thanks for the responses. I think I'll give the 6.x branch some more time to mature and stay with 5.4.1 for now.
